Davao's Velez bags 10-U title in Cebu-A A +A

DAVAO City netter John David Velez emerged 10-under unisex champion in the just-concluded first leg of the PSC-Philta Visayas Junior Tennis Championships that concluded in Consolacion Tennis Club in Cebu recently.
Velez spanked Eric Louise Longakit of Cebu, 6-0, 6-2 in the finals of the Philippine Tennis Association (Philta)-sanctioned netfest.
Hometown bets and Manila players ruled the rest of the categories. Jan Godfrey Seno of Cebu overwhelmed Clyde Bienes of Cebu, 6-2, 6-1, to annex the boys 18-under crown while Erika Manduriao breezed past fellow Manila player Ma.Dominique Ong, 6-2,6-1, in the distaff side.
Seno and Manduriao doubled their feats by sweeping the 16-under titles. Seno survived a 6-3, 7-5 win over Manuel Balce III of Manila in their men's event while Manduriao toyed with Cebu City's Jana Pages, 6-1, 6-1 in the girls category.
Two Cebu entries, meanwhile, lorded over their rivals in 14-under. Clyde John Laquio recovered from a first set loss to beat Francis Gener Lambayan also of Cebu, 2-6, 6-3,6 -3 for the men's plum while Zethley Mae Alferez demolished Kristin Renee Salimbangon, 6-0,6-4, for the girls title.
Cebu's Jace Christian Unto shutout Cesar Kristoffer Salimbangon, 6-0, 6-0, in boys 14-under finals while Mariel Ann Villa of Cebu toppled Ellaine Rose Bahonsua, 6-1,6-1 in the girls event.
Philta regional vice-presidents Ken Salimbangon and Juanito Cansino Jr. along with Cesar San Juan awarded the custom-made trophies and medals to the winners of the meet that drew 155 entries nationwide.
Cansino said all participants earned Philta junior points in the Group 2 tournament that was also co-hosted by the Municipality of Consolacion and sponsored by the Philippine Sports Commission.
The 2nd leg will be held at the Lapaz Tennis Courts in Iloilo City starting Nov. 7. (MLSA)
