ACTION gets more intense as the Davao Champions League unfurls its semi-finals at the Almendras Gym Davao City Recreation Center at 8:30 a.m. today.
The Agro Industrial Foundation of the Philippines (AIFCP) Sailors, which grabbed the second spot after the quarter-finals round, battles No. 3 University of Mindanao (UM) Wildcats at the curtain raiser while No. 1 Jose Maria College (JMC) Kings collides with the DMMA College of Southern Philippines (DMMACSP) at 10 a.m.
Agro secured its second position after surviving a fourth quarter rally by the DMMACSP Mariners, 71-68, at the end of the quarter-finals round held at the Rizal Memorial Colleges (RMC) Gym on Saturday night.
The Sailors, mentored by Roderick Conda, led 56-49 at the end of third period but DMMACSP's Al-Nael Lacid drilled in nine points and Ronald Bangoy added six in the fourth to cut Agro's lead by just one, 62-63, barely two minutes and 45 seconds left in the game.
Sailor Jeffrey Basmayor, however, also fired two back-to-back treys to keep the Mariners at bay, 69-63, only 1:06 left in the game. Lacid shortly answered with a triple, his second in the canto, to inch closer at 66-70. But the Sailors tightened their defense that left the Mariners succumbing to crucial errors in the dying seconds.
Basmayor poured in 21 points while Mikko Estrellante chipped in 14 for the Sailors while Lacid led the Mariners with 20 markers, Bangoy with 18 and Rashid Sacatan with 15.
Coach Conda said in the vernacular, "We will have to get ready when we face UM in the semis as they have defeated us by four points in our last. We need to work out on our defense so we can beat UM this time."
JMC coach Nick Serafica, meanwhile, told Sun.Star Davao that they will not be complacent against the B ambi Santander-coached Mariners.
"Dili mi magkumpyansa sa DMMACSP kay close man gani ilang laban sa Agro karon unya napildi pud biya mi sa Agro. Parehas man among mga players nga dunay mga stamina ug mudagan pud pero depensa gyud ang kinahanglan para makasiguro mi nga mudaug (We need not be complacent since it was a close fight with DMMACSP and Agro and Agro has also defeated us earlier. Our players and that of DMMACSP are equal in stamina and quickness so the key for us to win is to really put up solid defense)."
In the other game of cellar dwellers, Ateneo de Davao University Blue Knights defeated Holy Cross of Davao College Crusaders, 59-56, behind Jerwin Jorgensen and Paolo Dailisan who scored identical 10 in the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP)-sanctioned cagefest.
Semis winners, on the other hand, will play for the title in a best-of-three format tomorrow at the same venue.
