THE Jose Maria College (JMC) Kings and Agro-Industrial Foundation College of the Philippines (AIFCP) Sailors arranged a best-of-three finals series after ousting their respective rivals in the yesterday's semi-finals of the Davao Champions League at the Almendras Gym Davao City Recreation Center.
JMC leaned on its vast experience and fast break plays to hack out a 75-63 win over DMMA College of Southern Philippines (DMMACSP) Mariners while the Agro Sailors tamed the University of Mindanao (UM) Wildcats, 69-65.
Kings head coach Dodong Cagampang, in an interview after the game, said he was not happy with the way they played the Mariners, saying, "Pangit among gidula ‘run (We played a bad game)."
Cagampang said they will have to shape up for the finals against Agro, adding, "Dili mi magkumpyansa sa Agro kay makaantigo sad sila ug pamuntos, dagko sab ilang mga players. Sa depensa nalang gyud mi mamawi ani (We can't be complacent with Agro since they have good shooters and they have big players. We will counter that with tight defense)."
Cagampang's boys made a 10-0 run at the start of the third period but Ronald Bangoy, who drilled in 11 points of his total 23 output, led the rally for the Mariners that closed the gap, 41-43, barely three minutes and 57 seconds left in the canto.
JMC, however, capitalized on DMMACSP's crucial errors and costly turnovers in the last quarter and surged to a 13-point advantage, 69-53, only 3:56 remaining in the game.
Digos City native Kenny Riel Guibay and Tagum City native Bob Clu Ombecan combined for 15 points to lead the fourth period rally by the Kings.
The Mariners' efforts to stage a comeback failed having been contained by the defense put up by the Kings down the stretch.
Jumabon Bulac topscored for JMC with 22 and teammate Ombecan added 17. Mariners' Bangoy had 23 and Aric Fernandez made 15.
In the other semis game, Agro Sailors Kenneth Bendijo, Mikko Estrellante and Jeffrey Basmayor drilled in 18, 17 and 13 points, respectively, for the Sailors.
The battle for third between DMMACSP and UM were going on as of Monday. Game 1 of the finals was set to follow after the DMMACSP-UM match of the league presented by Phoenix Petroleum Philippines Inc. and sanctioned by Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas.
