COMPOSTELA Valley netter Shaina Rivera swept three titles at the close of the Palawan Pawnshop-Palawan Express Pera Padala regional age-group tournament recently at the Isulan Tennis Club in Sultan Kudarat.
Unheralded 13-year-old Rivera, who hails from Monkayo, stunned No. 2 Abegail Icoy, 5-3, 4-1, in girls 18-under finals. The ComVal bet, seeded fifth, upset top-seed Carlyn Bless Guarde, 5-3, 0-4, 10-7, in their girls 16-under semis before spanking Ebony Ronco, 4-0, 4-1, for the crown.
Rivera, a Philippine Tennis Academy mainstay, also annexed the girls 14-under plum by routing Minet Bentillo, 4-0, 4-2.
Guarde, however, bounced back by beating Jazelle Madis, 4-1, 4-0, in girls 12-under while fellow Sultan Kudarat native Bentillo captured the 10-under unisex title at the expense of Ma. Angela Novis, 4-2, 4-1.
John Emmanuel Estrope, meanwhile, subdued Eduardo Bagaforo, 4-1, 4-0, in their boys' 18-under titular clash then doubled the feat by whipping Jarel Edanga, 4-1, 4-0, in 16-under finals.
Sharing the limelight was 12-year-old hometown bet Vince EJ Tugade who swept two titles. He survived a 2-4, 4-2, 10-7 win over Edanga in boys 14-under then upended Alfred Marc Directo, 4-2, 5-3, in boys 12-under class.
Winners received trophies and merchandise in the four-day netfest sanctioned by the Philippines Tennis Association (Philta) and hosted by Gov. Teng Mangudadatu. (MLSA)
