ALEX Alanunay captured three titles at the close of the SBC Bowler of the Year finals held over the weekend at the Fairlanes Bowling Center.
Alanunay dethroned defending champion Boying Magday in the masters game, beating the latter, 10-9, in the three-ball tie-breaker after both players scored identical 113 pinfalls in the sudden death finals.
Alanunay, who earlier topped class B, bested three other class champions to annex the Bowler of the Year plum. He hit 143 pinfalls while class C champion Rudy Castillo rolled 126 to grab the runner-up honors followed by class A titlist Berting Gorgonio (113) and ladies champion Liza Berandoy (107) who placed third and fourth, respectively.
In class B, Alanunay garnered 248 after two games to gain the twice-to-beat advantage in the finals while Jimmy Sia (248) and Jay Libres (244) occupied the next two spots. In the step-the-ladder, Libres defeated Sia, 97-93, to book a finals berth. Libres, however, succumbed to Alanunay, 93-115, in their titular showdown.
Top qualifier Gorgonio, meanwhile, avenged his first game loss by nipping Arnel Crudo, 136-135, in the second game. Crudo took Game 1, 122-104.
Third-ranked Castillo, for his part, escaped a 102-101 win over No. 2 James Cedeno before upsetting top qualifier Rudy Gorpido in two straight games, 114-93, 100-97.
In the ladies event, Berandoy subdued Mathess Domino, 114-110, then outclassed No. 1 Helen Pugoy, 107-85, 115-108 in the championship.
Champions received cash prizes and trophies in the annual meet organized by the Sunday Bowlers Club.
SBC will hold its Christmas party and election of officers on Saturday. (MLSA)
