IT'S final. Davao City, which dominated the Mindanao Qualifying, will no longer send a delegation to the 2013 Batang Pinoy National Championships slated January 28 to February 1 in Bacolod City.

Sports Development Division of the City Mayor's Office (SDD-CMO) officer-in-charge William I. Ramirez, in a text interview, confirmed: "Dili ta madayon. Focus ta sa 2014 activities (We won't push through. We will focus on our 2014 activities instead)."

The national championships for 15 years old and below athletes was earlier set on November 19 to 23 but was reset due to devastation caused by Typhoon Yolanda in the Visayas and other parts of the country.

Ramirez, in a recent statement before the postponement, said the city will only send all Mindanao gold medalists to the nationals, citing funding constraints.

He said the lean delegation will be a "strong" one and will be capable to give pride and honor to the city of Davao.

A budget of P1.5 million, from the City Mayor's Office funds, was also allocated for the supposed Batang Pinoy stint. A Sun.Star Davao source, however, said the budget was no longer available after the year 2013 ended.

But Ramirez did not elaborate on the decision to miss action in Bacolod, as he only underscored that they will focus on implementing the Davao City Comprehensive Sports Program otherwise known as "Duterte Game Plan."

The program, according to the former chair of the Philippine Sports Commission, is focused on five key areas: 1. barangay sports development programs; street children, tribal, poor communities, out-of-school youth, women, PWD; 2. school sports development programs, 3. Sports science and administration and coaches education, 4. sports competition management, and 5. sports rehabilitation of government-owned facilities.

This year, the SDD-CMO will work on a P25 million budget, a huge jump from its P5 million allocation last year.

National finals-bound athlete, however, have been training soon after the Mindanao leg concluded at the Davao del Norte Sports and Tourism Complex in Tagum City.
