DAVAO City chess players are still hoping to make it to the 2013 Batang Pinoy National Championships slated January 28 to February 1 in Bacolod City despite the decision of the city to back out.
Ella Grace Moulic of Holy Cross of Davao College (HCDC), who championed in last year's Batang Pinoy Mindanao Qualifying Leg chess competition, will be joined by co-Holy Crossian Tahseen Saludsong together with Gimony siblings, Bhing Joel and Joerlz of Jose Maria College (JMC) to compete in the 15-under category.
In an online interview with Sun.Star Davao, Coach Alfred Moulic, father of Ella Grace, said they were really disappointed when they found out that the city will no longer send a delegation to Batang Pinoy National Championships.
Moulic said they were disappointed because it was declared that only gold medalists will be sent for Batang Pinoy, in which their silver and bronze medalists could not join.
"This will be the last time for most of our players to participate because they will turn 15 above this year. We are not certain if there will be a tougher chess team which will represent the city for the next Batang Pinoy Mindanao Qualifying Leg," Moulic said.
He said they are still waiting for Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte's response in their request for financial assistance.
"We submitted a solicitation letter to the mayor and we hope that it will be approved," he said.
He said that despite this circumstance, they remain grateful to HCDC and JMC for being supportive in the players' dream to participate in BP and make Davao City proud.
In preparing for the competition, Moulic said they do regular problem solving and puzzle activities to boost the players' mental alertness.
