HIGHLY-TOUTED Barangay Una Boxing Team of Davao del Norte lived up to its billing by sweeping a total of four gold medals, two silvers and four bronzes in the just-concluded 2013 Philippine Olympic Committee-Philippine Sports Commission (POC-PSC) Batang Pinoy National Championships in Bacolod City over the weekend.
Jerald Cantero, representing Davao del Norte-Panabo, clinched the boys kids powderweight (36 kgs.) gold medal over Cagayan de Oro City's Aldrin Pamisa Jr. who settled for the silver instead. Paolo Dato-on of Negros Occidental and Jimwel James Cerro of Mandaluyong shared the bronze.
Other golds were won by Davao del Norte-Panabo bets Joewellan Cantero, John Benedict Cadavido and Marjun Painar.
Joewellan topped the school boys light paperweight (42 kgs.) over Francis Jay Diaz of Cagayan de Oro City. Herjie Gemida of Cebu City and Romie Evale of Maasin City each got a bronze.
Cadavido, for his part, ruled the boys paperweight (44 kgs.) division where Romel Piamonte of Southern Leyte copped the silver and the bronzes went to Jestine Tesoro of Barangay Antonio O. Floirendo (AOF), also a Barangay Una mainstay, and Jerson Moreno of Digos City.
Pianar clinched the boys flyweight gold after beating Cris Ocanar of Cagayan de Oro City who got the silver while Renz Orcajada of Negros and Rommel Dagoy of Zamboanga City salvaged a bronze apiece.
Barangay Una Boxing Team manager Gene Rose Tecson, chief-of-staff of Cong. Anton Lagdameo, praised the boxers' feats in Bacolod.
"Granting that there are very few tournaments to expose the boys in, the team did very well and we are so very proud of them!" Tecson said in text messages to Sun.Star Davao on Monday.
She said they pick potential boxers from the barangays and train them in their program, adding, "But in competitions, they can bring their barangay, municipality or city's name."
Meanwhile, Barangay Una pugs Jiple Jay Cabrera (light pinweight, 46 kgs.) of Davao del Norte-Panabo and Darwin Caderao of Barangay AOF (light flyweight) annexed the silvers.
Bronze winners were light pinweight Judy Flores of Barangay AOF, light flyweight Ferdinand Apat and bantamweight Jhunrick Carcedo of Davao del Norte-Panabo in the tournament for 15 years old and below.
