DAVAO City's be-medaled judoka Sydney Tancontian used her expertise in the sport to beat her rivals and clinch the girls -62 kgs gold medal in the 2013 Philippine Olympic Commitee-Philippine Sports Commission (POC-PSC) Batang Pinoy National Championship wrestling competition held recently in Bacolod City.

Tancontian said, “My rivals from Ifugao, Zamboanga and Negros Occidental were experienced in the sport but since wrestling involves grappling-type techniques, I used the skills that I learned in judo and jiu-jitsu to win.”

The 14-year-old champion from Davao Central High School said she didn't expect to win as she lacks exposure in wrestling.

Guam-based wrestling expert Herman Macaraeg Cruz taught her wrestling techniques and he trains under her father Paolo, a multiple medalist himself, for judo.

“I did not expect to be the champion because I only trained for more or less thrice a month. Wala kaayo mi nag train sa wrestling (I really didn't train as much in wrestling). It was more of judo training,” she said during yesterday's Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at NCCC Mall Bowling, Billiards and Bar (B3) Center.

Fellow judoka Fil-British James Halasan Ryan also competed in the wrestling competition but he only settled for silver in boys -66 kgs.

Tancontian, meanwhile, plans to join a judo international competition in Singapore then fly to China in summer to study Chinese.

“I also wish to become a part of the Philippine team but my focus as of now is to remain as a school varsity scholar to be able to finish my studies,” she said. (MDC)
