TAGUM CITY, Davao del Norte - Defending champions Davao City secondary girls’ and boys’ spikers earned championship berths after beating their respective opponents in the Davao Region Athletic Association (Davraa) Meet 2014 volleyball competition at University of Mindanao Tagum Gymnasium here yesterday.

The girls team spanked Davao del Sur, 25-14, 25-11 in the crossover semi-finals. The Davao City team hacked out wins over Panabo City, Davao Del Norte, Mati City and Davao Oriental in the eliminations.

Secondary girls coach Kirk Marlon Mojica, in an interview, said they expect a stiff battle against Tagum City in the finals.

“Nalipay pud ko kay bisan na-injure ang duha nako ka-players nga sila Madeleine Madayag ug Erika Velasquez kay nidaog gihapon mi sa semi-finals cross-over match. Dili ko muingon nga mudaog mi sa finals pero trabahuon gyud namo kay close fight pud mi last year sa Tagum City (I am happy that despite two of my players being injured, we still won. I can’t tell who will win in the finals but we will work hard because Tagum City is also a strong contender),” he said.

Mojica said their exposure in the National Shakeys V-League gave them many lessons especially in improving their tactics and strategies.

He said, “Dili na maulaw ang mga players namo mudula karon. Nakat-on gyud mi sa Shakeys V-League. (We learned a lot during the Shakeys V-League and my players are more confident).”

He added that all players were each given the opportunity to play to make the team stronger.

Madayag will play her first and last Davraa as she will join the Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles soon.

Davao City secondary boys spikers, meanwhile, collides with Tagum City for the title today. Coach Ron Mirasol said the home court advantage will be an edge for their rival.

Mirasol said that Tagum City’s performance has improved a lot but he is confident of the skills and dedication of his team. “Focus lang gyud sa dula ang kanunay nakong advice sa ilaha ug salig sa kaugalingon (I often tell them to just focus and trust themselves)." (MDC)
