In an interview with Sun.Star Davao, Department of Education (Deped) Davao City Division sports coordinator Jima Gelmo lauded the city athletes' performance.

"Nalipay gyud ko nga sukad pa sa una ug hangtud karon, nagpabiling champion ang Davao City bisan paman sa kakulangon sa equipment kumpara sa Davao Del Norte (I am happy that Davao City retained the over-all championship despite our limitations in sports facilities unlike Davao del Norte that already has its own modern sports complex)," Gelmo said.

She added that coaches, officials and parents provided the athletes with the needed sports equipment.

She said that the region's target is to earn a higher rank in this year's Palarong Pambansa in Sta. Cruz, Laguna, saying: "One-digit place ang target namo karon kay last year, rank 11 lang ta. Dapat dili muubos ang rank karon sa Davao region (We target a better performance in the Palaro than our 11th finish last year)."

In elementary division, Davao City emerged champion in soccer boys, baseball, volleyball girls and boys, basketball boys, badminton boys doubles, badminton girls doubles, athletics, and swimming while the archery girls, arnis boys and girls, badminton, baseball boys, basketball, chess, football, softball girls, table tennis and volleyball girls lifted the city's feat in the secondary level.
