DAVAO City will defend its titles when the dancesports competition ushers the opening of the Southern Mindanao Private Schools Athletic Association (Prisaa) Meet 2014 at the University of Mindanao (UM) Tagum Gym at 2 p.m. today.

Davao Doctors College held the modern standard and Latin discipline titles of the regional meet last year.

Prisaa Region 11 executive director Joaquin "Boy" Sarabia yesterday said, "Aside from dancesports, we will also hold the vocal solo and Mutya ng Prisaa search in the opening."

He said games will yet begin tomorrow in separate venues.

Davao del Norte Sports and Tourism Complex will host the men's and womens' athletics, men's and women's swimming, men's football, men's and women's tennis and men's and women's table tennis events while men's and women's volleyball and men's and women's judo will be played at the UM Tagum Gym.

Karatedo and taekwondo will be held at the NCCC Mall Tagum; sepak takraw at the Trade Center; boxing at the Brgy. Una Boxing Gym in Panabo City; men's and women's basketball at Rotary Park; men's and women's beach volleyball at Tagum City Volleydrome; and baseball and softball at the Energy Park.

Davao City will try to defend its various titles against Davao del Norte and Davao del Sur delegations that are expected to give Dabawenyos a stiff competition.

"Davao City remains a force to reckon with in most sports but Davao del Norte boxers and beach volley spikers are still the heavy favorites," Sarabia said.

He earlier said all delegates are upbeat about using the multi-million facilities of the sports complex.

Some 800 athletes are competing in the regional qualifying for the 2014 National Prisaa Collegiate Games slated April 6 to 12 at the Davao del Norte Sports and Tourism Complex in Tagum City.

National Prisaa secretary-general and treasurer Boy Santos will represent chair Emmanuel Angeles as guest while Prisaa president Lita Montalban, president of Emar Human and Environmental College, will spearhead the opening ceremonies.
