PAL Interclub Davao clubs off to good start

BACOLOD CITY - Davao City golf clubs were off to a good start in their respective divisions as the Men's Regular Tournament of the 67th Philippine Airlines (PAL) Interclub opened at the Bacolod Golf and Country Club here Wednesday.

As of press time, Apo Golf occupied the second place of the Founders Division. With a total of 110 points, Apo Golf was only four points behind leaders Valley Golf. Jose Saavedra led Apo Golf team by submitting 29 while Albernito Decastro made 27, Leo Fusilero with 26, Vincent Gumapac added 28 and Thomas Francisco scored 22.

Rancho Palos Verdes also grabbed a good start, landing at fourth place in the Founders Division as of press time. Roderick Lo scored 28 points while Miculous Candelario (20), Christopher Tan (24), Noe Taojo (19) and Joel Yamyamin (33) chipped in for a combined score of 103.

In the Sportswriters Division, Davao City Golf scored a total of 97, just 12 points behind leaderLumbia. Andrew Bautista garnered 26 points as teammates Bong Basilla and Larry Pasquil scored identical 22. Gani Gascal had 17 and Ludwig Ledesma with 27 points.

Lanang Golf Club's scores were not yet available as of this writing.
In the Championship Division, defending Founders Division champion Orchard topped the rankings with 129 points with John Kier Abdon scoring 35 while Rodel Mangulabnan and Raymund Vincent Sangil adding 33 apiece. Tonito Payumo amassed 24 while Niko Santiano made 28 for the team.

Last year's third-placer Del Monte Golf ended Day 1 with 125 points to place second through the collected efforts of Jelbert Gamolo (35), Magno Arancin, Jr. (33), Julius Bautista (30), Francis Morilla (27) and Jansen Morilla (23).

Defending champion Cebu Country Club, seeking a three-peat this year, dropped to third place in the opening round. Carl Almario scored 26, while teammates Gew Nagai and Neri Jovi scored 34 and 25, respectively. Harvey Sytongsia's 29 points and Kiyofumi Takahashi's 26 rounded out the team's total of 115.

Valley Golf, meanwhile, paced the Founders Division with a total of 114 points from the joint output of RJ Baretto (25), Chito Laureta (29), Eddie Boy Lopez (31), Honor Mendoza (9) and Zaldy Villa's (29) to keep Apo Golf Club away at second place. Manila Southwoods was at third place. The scorers were Agustin Ferdinand (28), Shean Bedi (18), Ramon Escano III (25), Nestor Plan (29) and Joseph Tambunting (27) for a team total of 106.

In the Sportswriters Division, Lumbia led with 109 while Eagle Ridge and Iloilo Golf trailed with 101 and 100 points, respectively.

The Friendship Division was led by Victorias Golf & CC with 94 points while Up Tee Jots followed with 82 points and defending division champ Fil Am Hawaii in third with 79.

So Cal Redhawk topped the International Division having earned a total of 88 points. The Bay Area Golf Organization placed second with 83 and Fil Am Hawaii (79) in third.

In individual rankings, A Division was led by Orchard's Abdon with 35 points. Nagai of Cebu Country Club came in close second with 34 followed by Sangil of Orchard in third with 33.

For the B Division, Gamolo of Del Monte Golf grabbed the lead with 35 points, while Del Monte's Arancon, Rancho Palos Verdes' Yamyamin and Orchard's Mangulabnan shared the second spot with similar 33 points.

Today may split the kings of the C Division as Alabang's Popp, Villamor's Bautista, Sta. Elena's Ivan Ferreras and Victorias' Gomez took a share of the lead with 33 points each.

The 67th PAL Interclub tournament resumes today at the Marapara and Binitin golf courses here.

Also lending support are Airbus, Business Mirror, One Mega Group (Travel Now), Philippine Broadcasting Corporation, Manila Broadcasting Corporation, Petron and Manila Bulletin.
