City to host nat'l age-group chessfest-A A +A
Wednesday, March 5, 2014
THE country's top junior woodpushers will see action when Davao City hosts the 2014 National Age-Group Chess Championship slated March 21 to 23 at the NCCC Mall Davao.
Davao City's very own Batang Pinoy champion Ella Grace Moulic of the Holy Cross of Davao College and De La Salle University-based John Marvin Miciano will lead the cast for host team in the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP)-organized event.
Early favorites also include the Balbona brothers of Cebu City and the San Diego sisters woman Fide master (WFM) Marie Antoinette and Jerlyn Mae of Cavite.
NCFP regional director and international arbiter James Infiesto, in a press conference at NCCC Mall Davao yesterday, said the event will serve as qualifying for the grand finals where champions will represent the country to the 2014 Asean+ Age-Group Chess Championship in Macau on June 3 to 12.
Infiesto said that the tournament opens doors for the Dabawenyo young chess players to showcase their skills and qualify for the nationals.
"We have great young chessers in the city.
The only problem is that they seldom join national competitions because of the expenses in transportation and now that elimination will be held here, there are better chances for more Dabawenyos to qualify," he said.
The tournament is open to all youth players boys and girls (20 years old and below), who are members of the NCFP. Categories to be contested are below 20, 18, 16, 14, 12, 10 and eight years old.
A six to seven round Swiss System format will be followed depending on the number of participants per category wherein the top two players in the boys and girls divisions will advance to the grand finals together with the seeded and qualified titled players.
Trophies, medals and cash prizes will be awarded to all the winners.
Registration is P300. Participants must submit a photocopy of birth certificate as proof of age.
