Ambasa, Wagdos win Phoenix fun run

DAVAO City multi-titled runners Sonny Wagdos and Mona Liza Ambasa clinched the 10k titles of the 77th Araw ng Dabaw Phoenix Family Fun Run held yesterday in an out-and-back course from SM Lanang Premier.

Wagdos, a University of Mindanao varsity scholar checked in at 33 minutes and 24 seconds over Elmer Bartulo to capture the gold medal of the 10k men's division. Martulo clocked 34:34 to settle for the second place while Michael Echalico (34:41) finished third.

In an interview with Sun.Star Davao, Wagdos said that despite winning in various marathons, he still trains every day. "Dili sayon muapil ug mga race ug bisan fun run ni, part gihapon ni sa akong training, (This fun run is still part of my training.)"

Former Brokenshire College of Davao assistant coach Ambasa ruled the 10k women's division and registered 42:59. Cynthia Jaro (44:36) and April Diaz (46:10) came second and third, respectively.

Ambasa, meanwhile, expressed her gratitude. "Dako akong pasalamat ug nalipay ko sa akong pagdaug kay daghan pud mga iladong runners sa Davao City ang niapil karon. (I am very thankful and happy with my win today since I raced against other well-known runners from Davao City.)"

The men's 5k title went to Michael Constantino (16:55) who outran Rolly Paderna (17:08) and Glen Payap (17:12) while Mae Gae Miñora (19:48) bagged the women's 5k title beating Rufa Sorongon (20:11) and Creselyn Jaro (20:22).

Jetli Lirazan registered 10:20 to top the men's 3k division. The next two spots were shared respectively by Jilian Naparan (10:23) and Josaiman Bajao (12:21).

Pia Zuarez (12:08) was hailed champion in the women's 3k followed by Vernagil Sabuero (12:28) and Natalie Margarette Roble (13:55).

Special awards were given to Team Titans Davao as the biggest professional running delegation, Vicente Hizon Elementary School as biggest school delegation with 100 participants, Compostela Valley Province with Governor Arturo Uy as the biggest LGU delegation while the youngest runner award went to Joan Francis Palacio, two years old who ran 5k.

All winners received cash prizes, medals and gift certificates from Phoenix Petroleum Philippines Inc. plus finisher's certificate to all participating runners.

All proceeds of the event will be given to Phoenix Foundation Charities.
