VICMAR VICENTE of Cycleline Team Butuan City grabbed the title of the open elite division in an unexpected finish at the close of Ciudades Tierra Series Cross Country MTB Race, yesterday at First Mindanao Industrial Park (FMIP) Block 1 Lot 8 Ciudades, Mandug.

Vicente was in a close race against Ronda Pilipinas International 2014 champion and teammate Reimon Lapaza during the first three laps of the race, wherein the latter was leading. An unexpected twist, however happened in the fourth lap.

Lapaza came short in his counting and thought that the fourth lap was the final lap. He stopped in the fourth lap and was preceded by other riders, making him unable to win the race. He tried to continue but could not rebuild his energy until he fainted and the medics came in.

Vicente took the champion’s prize of P10,000 while the next two places were shared by Ireezbone Barrientos of Porbo Team Kidapawan and Jaynald Daraydo of Apoville Bikingcoy Kidapawan. Barrientos received P6,000 while Daraydo went home with P4,000.

In an interview with Sun.Star Davao, Vicente said that he really did not expect to win because all other competitors are great riders. “Expect nako si Lapaza mudaog pero ing-ana man gyud nang race, dili nato mahibaw-an kung unsay mahitabo pero nalipay pud ko na nadaug ko. (I am happy to win the title. I expected Lapaza to win but you can't predict everything,)” he said.

The 50 years old and above category meanwhile was ruled by Ernesto Sagario followed by Ely Poormor and Conrad Mercado. Joel Parba dominated the 40-49 category while Joel Rojo and Hilario Ladra came second and third, respectively.

Marcial Catanggui of Cycleline Butuan won in the 35-39. The second spot went to Dioscoro Genonsalao of Sta. Cruz Davao Del Sur while Kidapawan’s Wilbur Dayao settled for third.

For the 30-34, first place was Marvin Villiancio, Dexter Nonato of Mayor Rody Duterte Cycling Team came second and third place was Frederick Puya. Lloyd Berhami ruled the 20-29 while the next two spots were awarded to Jed Lopez and Renmark Ligasan.

Gilbert Enerciso emerged champion in the juniors’ division beating Mark Darrel Echavez and Warren Sagarino. Anne Villanueva defeated Salome Zamora and Roan Ledesma to capture the women’s title.

All winners received medals and cash prizes from the event organized by Lapanday Properties Philippines Inc. (LPPI) in cooperation with Davao XC-Mumho Riders, Racefood, Kamikaze, 8a Performance and GT Bikes.

According to LPPI Sales and Marketing Manager Maria Luisa Abaya, more events will be slated this year to showcase El Centro Park.

“There will be summer fiesta on April and a football competition on May. El Centro is a place for all sports enthusiasts and families to enjoy,” she said.

Ciudades is the first large-scale integrated mixed-use and master planned township, which seeks to bring in several communities to form a whole new city.
