THE Davao Volleyball Association, the Philippine Volleyball Federation, PVF-sanctioned NSA or National Sport Association has again proven itself worthy of the support of Mayor Rodrigo Duterte and Vice-Mayor Paolo Duterte following its successful, orderly conduct and well-attended official sports tournament of the 77th Araw Ng Dabaw.

Headed by Engr. D’Artagnan Yambao, one of the company officials of MVP, Dava-PVF presented a modest but successful and lively conduct of a volleyball tournament participated in by a total of 16 teams, four each in grade school boys and girls and four each also in high school girls and boys.

What Dava lacks in finances, we have reinforced with the use of equipment I personally owned, said Yambao, who is also national director of the PVF from the Davao Region.

The Department of Education is also a willing and cooperative participant in the tournaments funded by the Government of the City of Davao in coordination with the city’s Sports Development Division serving as the umbrella organization of all the lively 24 sports events spread all throughout the different venues from the city hall grounds to public and private school gyms and the entertainment centers of the malls.

Most events in controlled and limited movements like judo, karatedo, taekwondo and sit-down sports like chess were hosted by the different malls while most ball events were held in the different gyms of the schools except football which was fairly organized and held at the sprawling Tionko-owned property of the Davao Football Association.

My limited coverage of the games can only share so much in terms saluting some winners of the events.

Three of the most consistent champion teams of volleyball are the Ateneo grade school girls, the Pablo Lorenzo high school boys and the Davao City NHS high school girls which have been dominating the games in their respective division for decades now.

In grade school boys, Kabacan Elementary School is making its presence felt as back to back champions. Shen Alagao, current president of the Davao Volleyball Association is encouraging support and importance to training as early as the elementary years. Our good players in college and high school have learned the basic rudiments of the games early on. For this reason, Daks Yambao is again organizing a 5-day PVF-sanctioned course in coaching principles and techniques next month.

We would like to give thanks and honor to the highest organizing committee of the 77th Araw Ng Dabaw headed by Mayor Duterte himself and the different department heads and workers in government, who are themselves doing most of the traditional Pinoy Games under the auspices of Dachea – Davao City Hall Employees Association. Those who can still play physical were grouped in a basketball tournament of their own aside from the most lively commercial league spearheaded by the CMO-Royal Mandaya Hotel.

The unsung heroes of the successful cultural and sports events were the hardworking men and women of the uniformed services of the AFP and PNP particularly DCPO Chief Vicenti Danao and Task Force Davao all spread out to watch over the peaceful and enjoyable conduct of the month long activities.

If our people and visitors are enjoying the annual festivities at home or on the streets, that is because the police and the auxiliary services have done their work well in round the clock precision under the close supervision and support of the mayor.
