Holy Child, Ateneo score Youngstars opening wins-A A +A
Thursday, April 24, 2014
DEFENDING champion Holy Child College of Davao (HCCD) Reds and Ateneo de Davao University axed debut wins at the start of the Coca-Cola PBA Youngstars Davao leg basketball tournament at the Gaisano Grand Citimall SkyGym yesterday.
The Reds routed Toril District, 94-55, while Ateneo hacked out a 78-54 win over Ford Academy of the Arts.
Reds assistant coach Roger Rabago said, "Sana i-bless ni Lord at maging
tuloy-tuloy ang panalo."
Holy Child head coach Nestor Sorrosa earlier downplayed their title-retention bid this year since most of their players who competed in the Youngstars last year are bound for the Palarong Pambansa. Thus, they are parading a new line-up this year.
The Miguel Solitaria-coached Ateneo, meanwhile, tightened defense forcing Ford to succumb to crucial turnovers and costly errors in the league organized by Duterte Basketball League and sanctioned by Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas regional director Regino "Boy" Cua.
Solitaria's wards dominated all periods and never looked back to secure the win. Holy Child plays Blue Knights at 10 a.m. today in Group A while Ateneo battles Daniel R. Aguinaldo National High School at 11:30 a.m. in Group B.
Other games today pit Davao Jones Academy against Toril at 1 p.m. and Ford against Agro-Industrial Foundation College of the Philippines (AIFCP) at 2:30 p.m.
The league, co-presented by Coca-Cola Philippines and the Philippine Basketball Association, drew 10 teams that were divided into two groups. Only the top two teams in each group will enter the cross-over semi-finals en-route to the finals that stakes a ticket to the Mindanao finals in Zamboanga City on May to 4 in Zamboanga City. (MLSA)
