HEAVY favorites Holy Child College of Davao and Ateneo de Davao University grab their second straight wins in yesterday's resumption of the Coca-Cola PBA Youngstars Davao Leg at the Gaisano Grand Citimall SkyGym Thursday.

Defending champion Holy Child Reds lived up to their billing by whipping the Blue Knights, 87-54, in the second day action of the Duterte Basketball League (DBL)-organized cagefest sanctioned by Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) regional director Regino "Boy" Cua.

Reds head coach Nestor "Tating" Sorrosa told Sun.Star Davao, "Nakaloy-an lang sa Diyos nga midaug mi (God was just gracious to give us another win)."

Carlito Rodriguez poured in 18 points to lead scoring for the Reds. His teammate Cyrill Gonzales chipped in 15 as James Aaron Royo and Joshua Reyes added 12 points each.

Ivan San Diego and Lance Carr combined for 27 for the Blue Knights that absorbed its second straight defeat.

Sorrosa, however, said they can't be complacent as there are still two games left for them to play in Group A. The Reds clash against Davao Jones Academy at 2:30 p.m. today before colliding with Assumption College of Davao (ACD) at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday. Sorrosa's team crushed Toril District, 94-55, last Wednesday.

Ateneo, for its part, hacked out a rousing 85-50 win over Daniel R. Aguinaldo National High School (DRANHS) to stay unbeaten after two games to lead Group B.

Ateneo head coach Miguel Solitaria said, "We still need to improve in every game and develop our desired chemistry since we have four new guys in the roster."

Solitaria cited Holy Child, Assumption and Emar Human and Environmental College as tough teams to beat, thus, they will have to "be in great shape" when his team plays against them.

"Our wins do not assure us to make it all the way to the finals. But we are taking each game at a time," Solitaria added.

Ateneo thrashed Ford, 78-54, in the opening game. Ateneo takes on Emar at 1 p.m. today when games resume in the league co-presented by Coca-Cola Philippines and the Philippine Basketball Association.

Holy Child paced Group A with a clean 2-0 slate while ACD, which demolished Blue Knights (84-51) Wednesday, occupied the second spot with a 1-0 card while 0-1 Toril was at third followed by 0-2 Blue Knights at the bottom. The Davao Jones Academy was still playing Toril in its first game as of presstime.

In Group B, 2-0 Ateneo took the top spot in the current team standings while 1-0 Emar was at second. Ford, Agro-Industrial Foundation College of the Philippines (AIFCP) and DRANHS each shared the cellar with 0-1 card each. Emar subdued Agro, 69-60.

Also pitted today are DRANHS against Ford at 10 a.m. and Toril against ACD at 11:30 a.m. (with report from MDC)
