-A A +A

Friday, April 25, 2014

THE only day in the year that I do not get to submit a golf article is on Good Friday. Why? Because there is no newspaper on Good Friday. I am disappointed because the first major of the year, The Masters, was held days before Good Friday. And I was excited to talk about The Masters. It has been two weeks, and so, ‘panis’ na my stories about the Masters. I would rather not talk about it anymore. But, I will mention the top 10 and ties.

Here they are, the top 10 and ties of The Masters, 2014: first – Bubba Watson, tied for second – Jonas Blixt and Jordan Spieth, fourth – Miguel Angel Jimenez, tied for fifth – Rickie Fowler and Matt Kuchar, seventh – Lee Westwood, tied for eighth – Bernhard Langer, Jimmy Walker, Rory McIlroy, John Senden, Kevin Stadler and Thomas Bjorn.

Local News. Are you familiar with The Ryder Cup? If you are a golfer, I am sure you are familiar with it. For those who do not know, it is a golf competition between the US team and the European team. Well, there is a local tournament that is similar to the Ryder Cup and it is called the 1st Chikaan Cup. This tournament is a battle between Rancho Palos Verdes Golf & Country Club and Apo Golf & Country Club. Each team has 12 players.

‘Chikaan’, was named so by the organizer, Glenn G. Yap, who happens to be the proprietor of the Chikaan Restaurant located at Abreeza Mall. When asked why he decided to put up this tournament, Mr. Yap said he was inspired by the Ryder Cup. He also mentioned that he believes that this annual tournament will be remembered and will be talked about in years to come. I agree.

This is a two-day tournament which will be held at Rancho Palos Verdes starting today, April 25, up to April 26, 2014. Next year, Mr. Yap plans to move the venue to Apo Golf Club. And the year after that, back to Rancho Palos Verdes. And just like the Ryder Cup, they will have a big trophy to be given to the winning team.

On day 1, there will be 5 team matches—2 Foursome Matches (alternate shot), 2 Fourball Matches (Best/better ball), and 1 Scramble Match. On day 2, there will be 12 single matches.

Here are the players from both teams:

Apo Golf Team – Karloz Alba (team captain), Ryan Co, Denden De Castro, Alimar Etrone, Leo Fusilero, Paul Garcia, Jing Gavino, Vince Gumapac, Jorge Martinez, Tsikoy Saavedra, Patrick Tan, and Toffee Tionko
Rancho Palos Verdes Team – Odick Lo (team captain), Larry Miculob, Ninot Galicia, Chris Tan, Marc Lopez, Leo Yap, Joel Yamyamin, Randy Cadiogan, Diemy Monedero, Joe Marfori, Ting Castillo, and Dominic Choi
To Glen, Toffee and Odick, thank you for the info. Good Luck to the participants!

On Saturday and Sunday, there is a tournament at Davao City Golf Club and it is called The 1st Womb Open Golf Tournament. This is a fund-raising tournament organized by the members of Womb. Womb stands for—Women of Matina Beauties. Naks naman. What can I say, Womb’s members truly are real beauties.

The Prime sponsors of this tournament are Cherrylume, Kawasaki, Pearl Farm, First Line, Villa Stella by the Sea, Secdea Beach Resort, Emcor, and Davao City Golf Club. The Major sponsors are JBridge International, Dover Lanes Kidapawan and Davao City Water District. Some of the proceeds will go to Lamdag Foundation.

Hole in one prize? According to Evelyn Ponce and Jover Vergara of WOMB, there will be two motorcycles up for grabs—a Skygo motorcycle and a Kawasaki motorcycle. And, during the awarding ceremony, the babes from Chix Davao will present a dance number.

For those who will join this tournament, good luck to you! Happy golfing!
