Davao Lady Agilas humbles Ateneo

UNHERALDED Davao Lady Agilas humbled UAAP champion Ateneo de Manila University Lady Eagles, 22-25, 25-18, 25-27, 25-18, 19-17, in the quarter-finals of the Shakey's V-League Season 11 First Conference at the FilOil Flying V Arena in San Juan on Thursday.

Lady Agilas assistant coach Abet Bernan, in text messages to Sun.Star Davao on Friday, praised the efforts of the team mentored by Shane Alagao.

"Lumaban lang talaga yung mga bata. Ini-enjoy lang nila yung laro kaya walang pressure. Hinigpitan lang ang depensa at blocking. Grabe ang teamwork nila," Bernan said.

He said, however, that they will have to play Adamson University in another quarter-finals match on May 6. A win over Adamson will secure Davao's ticket to the semi-finals.

Bernan said, "Kailangan kasi dalawa ang panalo para makapasok sa semis."

Adamson, according to him, is reinforced by two Thai players and a veteran spiker Ma. Paulina Soriano.

"Adamson also has good floor defense and blocking. Our team relies on floor defense, blocking and teamwork. We hope to sustain this level of play then we might have a chance against Adamson, God willing," Bernan added.

He went on saying that they will do whatever it takes to win a seat in the finals. "We dedicate our games to the people of Davao and Mindanao."

The Davao squad, which is the first Mindanao team to join in the counry's prestigious women's volleyball competition, is a selection of top collegiate players led by team captain Venus Flores of Jose Maria College.

Other JMC players Angel Mae Antipuesto, Jocemer Tapic and Irish Dignadice along with University of Mindanao's May Shiel Agton, Princess Joy Oliveros and Reynelen Raterta; Holy Cross of Davao College's Mary Grace Berte and Kween Marie Claire Dawang; and San Pedro College's Aurora Enriquez are also in the cast beefed up by Cherry Ann Balse of the National Irrig
