LOW-RANKED Federico Ventanilla, Jr. ruled the recently-concluded 1st Mace Anniversary Open Non-Master Chess Challenge at Cambe's Fastfood Garden in Midsayap, Cotabato.

Ventanilla, seeded 38th, tallied 6.5 points to beat 38 other players entered in the Swiss System format tournament officiated by national master Prospero "Bebot" Cruz.

The fourth-seeded Melchor Arcenas, Jr. edged two other 5.5 scorers Ricardo Arce, Jr. and Talib Tiboron via superior tiebreaks to place second. Arce and Tiboron took the third and fourth spots, respectively.

Five-pointers Ronald Arcenas and Jose Nori Buhat as well as Anwar Sadat, Levi Ventanilla, Charlie Luayon and Percival Guerrero, who earned similar 4.5 points, rounded up the top 10.

Winners received trophies from organizers during the awarding rites graced by Cruz, NM Roger Sarirp, Mayor Romeo Araña and chess club president Elias A. Catedral.

Organizers said they plan to hold a monthly open tournament after the success of the chessfest. A huge event in November is also being prepared.
