Golf: The Duel between the North and the South-A A +A
Thursday, May 22, 2014
WHAT are we going to talk about first? You have heard of The Ryder Cup—the battle between Team USA and Team Europe. And then there is The President’s Cup—the battle between Team USA and the International Team excluding Europe. Our local version which took place recently is The Chikaan Cup which is the battle between Team Apo Golf and Team Rancho Palos Verdes. Don’t we have a Philippine Golf Tour version of it? Yes, we do.
It is called ‘The Duel’, and it is a battle between the North (Luzon) and the South (Visayas and Mindanao). It is on-going, from May 20-23, 2014 at Cebu Country Club. Who are the players? North Team – Angelo Que, Miguel Tabuena, Carl Santos-Ocampo, Michael Bibat, Mars Pucay, Edward Reyes, Gerald Rosales, Benjie Magada, Jun Bernis, Randy Garalde, James Ryan Lam, and Jun Rates South Team – Tony Lascuña, Elmer Salvador, Jay Bayron, Cassius Casas, Mhark Fernando, Jhonnel Ababa, Elmer Saban, Marvin Dumandan, Jerson Balasabas, Charles Hong, Clyde Mondilla, and Frankie Miñoza On Day 1 and 2, there were five matches and the format were foursomes (alternate shot) and four-ball (best ball). On Day 3, which is today, there will be 12 single matches. The team that reaches 16 ½ points shall be declared winner.
The first Duel was held at Alabang Country Club in 2012 and Team South won. The second Duel was in 2013 also held at Alabang Country Club and Team North won. Hmmm, the tournament was held twice in Alabang Country Club which is in Luzon. An advantage for Team North. Good thing that this year, it is at Cebu Country Club.
I hope Team South wins again. Most of the players in Team South are from Davao. And, Cebu Country Club is the home course of Hong. And then we have Miñoza playing for Team South this year. We have the advantage, I think…I hope. Go Team South!
Change topic. As you know, the 2014 ICTSI Philippine Open just concluded. An Aussie won and his name is Marcus Both. Congratulations! This is his third Asian Tour win.
Here are the top finishers: 1st – Both (Australia); tied for 2nd – SiddikurRahman(Ban), Nathan Holman (Australia), Lascuña (Philippines), Arnond Vongvanij (Thailand), Jay Bayron (Philippines); 7th – Hsieh Tung-shu (TPE), tied for 8th – Jazz Janewattananond (Thailand), Wang Jeung-hun (Korea).
