12 teams to play Davao rugby football tourney

SOME 12 rugby football clubs of Davao City will see action as the Davao City Summer Sports for Peace Festival Rugby Tournament kicks off on May 31, 2014 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Davao City National High School (DCNHS).

SOS Children’s Village of Davao, Foundation of BalayPasilungan, MatinaAplaya Warriors Rugby, Tugbok Rugby, Buhangin Falcons Rugby Club, Royal Valley Pirates, SGB Golems, Tambayan Center for Children’s Rights Inc., DCNHS Alumni, Royal Valley Alumni, Mindanao Kokusai Daigaku Lions and University of Mindanao (UM) will test their skills in the event.

Categories to be contested in the Davao Durians Rugby Football Club (DDRFC) organized tournament are under 14 and open (both mixed gender team composition).

DDRFC development officer Blessie Kate Delos Santos said 12 teams will compete in the U14 division while eight teams will square off in the open division.

“It will be a six-A side tournament wherein eight minutes will be given per match and 10 minutes for the bronze and gold medal games,” Delos Santos said.

She also said that after the single round robin games, the top two teams per group will battle in the playoffs (crossover knockout format) while in the U-14 division, the top two teams per group and the two best ranked teams will qualify for the playoffs.

RIPPA Rugby rules will be applied in the tournament that will award medals to the top three teams as well as the Most Valuable Players.

The event is presented by the City Government of Davao through the Sports Development Division of the City Mayor’s Office (SDD-CMO) and City Tourism Operations Office in cooperation with Philippine Rugby Football Union, Pot Bellied Pigs RFC Hong Kong, Meerkat Security Services and DHL.
