Sabaldan: Ready for the big league-A A +A

THERE are only three gatherings that can sufficiently fill up roofed stadiums or the big domes.
One is a religious conclave, second a major concert, and third a sporting event.
One of the biggest single construction projects to hit the sprawling industrial-educational zone of Davao City is that of Jose Maria College, aptly billed as the King Dome.
A dome is a large hemispherical structure like that of the 20,000 seating capacity Smart-Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City. The big difference is that the latest ACQ project is a no-mean structure that can house all 65,000 people in one event. That is also more than double the capacity of the most recent, most modern SM-owned Mall of Asia Arena in Pasig City.
Everything that Pastor Apollo C. Quiboloy or ACQ builds is appropriately named after the LORD or evokes the title of the LORD’s deity like that of the most recent addition to his multifarious organizations the Sonshine Sports Management.
Sonshine Sports start only with managing the careers of six potential international professional boxers in partnership with the Braveheart Promotions of former North Cotabato governor and sportsman Manny Piñol.
But that is only the beginning. We know how ACQ operates. The bigger vision lies ahead. Sonshine Sports could turn into one big time, multi-sports organization back-up by millions of followers of the Kingdom here and abroad.
In fact, Sonshine Sports was already considering football and futsal events region-wide with Peter Lat and a midfielder named Engr. Edgar Te ahead of Piñol’s Braveheart boxing.
Pastor Quiboloy is not really a new player in sports. Like Manny Pacquiao, he can also suddenly dart from out of nowhere for a three-point shot or a dazzling lay-up.
The banner title of the religious organization that ACQ has painstakingly built through the years is itself evoking the eternal reign as the Kingdom of Jesus Christ, The Name Above Every Name. This is the major entity that is now building a truly state-of-the-art P3-billion King Dome at the premises of the Jose Maria College compound which is adjacent to the Davao International Airport.
Pastor Apollo Quiboloy is no small time builder, either men or machines. The last time we met was at Jess Dureza’s firing range at Seagull in Davao del Sur.
The first time we met was in the early 80’s at his small, struggling Pentecostal Assembly Of God church along Villamor Street in Agdao District. He went his own way fasting and promoting an organization of the faithful that would banner and name the Name of the Lord and not the name of an organization.
Taking a peek of the ACQ mind as a builder, I talked to one of his project engineers, who was recruited from a quintuple A or 5A accredited international engineering outfit.
According to the engineer, Solomonic wisdom and the Book of Kings are what occupy the ACQ mind in starting a major project: “And it was in the heart of David my father to build a house for the name of the LORD God of Israel.” (I Kings 8:17 KJV)
