WOMEN Basketball caps a lively, long summer months of the Davao City Sports for Peace Festival featuring a variety of sports events, training, coaches orientation, workshop and seminars on old and new techniques and the sports scientific conference.

These are part of the revitalized sports program of Mayor Rodrigo Duterte to provide more venues for young people and adults for them to productively use their energy during vacation.

The fully air-conditioned Almendras Gym was the site of an exciting basketball tournament capping the long months of a summer sports festival with host Ateneo de Davao University winning third place against the Enderun Colleges of the Philippines in the Best of Four of the Ist AdDU Women Basketball Invitational.

The heartthrobs of Metro Manila basketball were there. The Ateneo de Manila Lady Eagles had engaged the Holy Cross of Davao College Lady Crusaders to a full, exciting 40 minutes of physical play in the championship.

Where have all the tall women gone? Except for the 6-foot two Alicia Mendez of Enderun, women basketball in Davao is utterly lacking in height.

But what the Holy Cross Lady Crusaders lack in height, they have confidently compensated in ball handling skills, speed and hustling defense.

Lorelei Lor, Agwar, Gaudiano, Dahay and the rest of the gutsy Lady Crusaders have given hopes and inspiration to the noisy hometown crowd to stay until the final buzzer sounded. So noisy, one would think that the lead is only a point although the schore had been lopsided from the start, 52-24 at halftime and 84-61 final score.

No one from the audience is seen leaving as Lorelei Lor was putting up a good fight with her 3-point shots and the tiny Agwar kept herself in the middle of a shoving, hustling possession of the ball against the tallest, most talented Danica Jose, the other 6-footer Akiko Tonita and the heftier, speedier Kara Buendia.

The only thing short with the Ateneo Lady Eagles is the hot-shooting Lorena Go, short in height and shorter hair. So short was her boy cut, one would have the mistaken her from availing of the Summer Libreng Gupit of Councilor Edgar Ibuyan in Bankerohan. At Barangay 5-A, you seldom see any of the players in the citywide, 180-barangay Duterte Basketball League sporting long hair for fear of being mistaken by the mayor as a drug pusher.
