THE 1st Governor Claude “Auding” Bautista Mindanao Open Chess Championship will get underway on June 30 to July 1 at Gaisano Grand Digos City in celebration of the Araw ng Davao del Sur.
Davao del Sur sports coordinator Oliver Enot bared this in yesterday’s Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at NCCC Mall Davao, Bowling, Billiards and Bar Center.
Enot said that chess players from the cities of Davao, General Santos and Kidapawan are competing along with a Makati City team in the seven-round Swiss System format tournament headed by tournament director Jimmy Dano.
Enot said that the event is part of the grassroots development program of the province, “First time talaga ito kasi sa tinagal-tagal na panahon, hindi tayo nagkaroon ng malaking chess tournament sa probinsya. This is part of our grassroots development program.”
He said, “Wala pang concrete sports program ang probinsya and this is one of our ways to promote Davao del Sur as a great destination for sports lalo na sa mga kabataan.”
He said that the sports industry of Davao del Sur is still young but has produced many talents.
“Nagsugod palang gyud ta pero daghan nata mga naila nga athletes sa bisan unsang sports events. Puhon, maningkamot mi nga hinay-hinay makatukod ug mas daghang sports activities ug mga tao nga mututok sa sports. Mag sugod sa ta sa gamay alang sa atong mga batan-on. (We are just starting in sports but we plang to put up more activities and more people to focus on sports in the future. Let’s start small for our youth),” he said.
Cash prizes await winners with the champion going home with P15,000 and the next two players receiving P7,000 and P5,000. Cash prizes of P3,000, P2,000 and P1,000 will go to the third, fourth and fifth placers, respectively. The seventh to 10th placers will each settle for P500.
Registration fee is P200. Interested players may sign up on-site before the tournament begins.
