THOUSANDS of summer league participants in the revitalized sports program of Mayor Rodrigo Duterte have finally completed months of lively and colorful sports competitions.

Basketball Men puts the icing on the cake with an exciting finish last Friday morning prior to the simple awarding rites administered by J. Melchor Quitain and Butch Ramirez, OIC of the Sports Development Division at the Davao City Recreation Center.

Davao Merchant Marine Academy felt like the San Antonio Spurs as they overhauled a confident lead by the Jose Maria College. DMMA overrun JMC midway in the third and final quarter, 75-66 on the same day the momentum-setting Game I of the NBA finals was taking place with the Spurts taking the lead of the 7-game series against the Miami Heat.

Basketball remains the flagship sports event in any sports festival in Davao. The prime movers of the 33-event summerfest which included the Magnus-Team Davao Cup 2014 National World Shoot Qualifier, are themselves skilled basketball players in their high school and college varsity years.

City Administrator Quitain and former PSC chairman Butch Ramirez are themselves contented of the outcome. Equally happy and thankful are the individual awardees from the MVPs to the rookies. Added feathers to their caps have given young athletes greater self-esteem and the cash awards will help them and their parents make both ends meet in time for the school opening.

The fatherly image and humility of city administrator J. Melchor Quitain give the young athletes inspiration as most able representative and alter ego of the mayor. One of the most trusted legal minds in the loyal service to the people and Mayor Duterte, Quitain is qualified to be an Executive Secretary.

The lead agency of the Davao City Sports for Peace Festival is the Davao City Sports Development Division. The festival is also in collaboration with the City Tourism Operations Office, the reason why spectator sports are also part of the program like the majestic 15th Davao Horse Show and Competition and the colorfully exciting Dragon Boat Club Crew Challenge at the Baywalk of Matina Times Beach.

The Dragon Boat like tenpin bowling, wushu and boxing are the events that have honored the country with international championship titles. Professional boxing gave us the highest honors with Manny Pacquiao’s record, stunning 8-division championship titles.

The AFP-PNP Summer Cup went ahead last week of April from the official opening rites of May 1 as the uniformed personnel and the police are tasked with securing most of the sports, tourism, business and the day-to-day life of one of the most livable cities in Asia. The Run of the Titans Season 2 was also conducted ahead for the fun run enthusiasts in order to accommodate more official entries to the sports festival.

More and more children are learning the rudiments of our national sport Arnis with the orientation and clinic held at Gaisano South CitiMall last May 5 to 7. The Chess Clinic was also well participated at the NCCC Mall last May 7 to 9.

A supplemental volleyball training was also conducted by the Davao Volleyball Association daily during the second week.

Philippine Volleyball Federation director Engineer D’Artagnan Yambao with the help of the Balibolista de Dabaw coaches and players of the Davao Lady Agilas lead by Venus Flores and Mitch Agton have inspired participants from the different schools.
