MAYOR Rody Cycling Team rider Erick Dave Apinar clinched the juniors mountainbike title of the T'nalak Roadbike and Mountainbike Challenge in South Cotabato over the weekend.
Apinar, who landed eighth in road bike, reeled past Peter Arisgado of Koronadal City and Darrel Bitita, who placed second and third, respectively.
The Dabawenyo ace received a cash prize of P2,000 while the next two finishers got P1,500 and P1,000. They also received certificates.
Apinar, in a phone interview with Sun.Star Davao on Monday, said, "Wala man ko naglisod sa among agianan sa MTB (I did'nt have a hard time with the route)."
He, however, slowed down midway to the finish of the road bike.
Meanwhile, Ating Gabor of Cycle Line team of Butuan City topped the seniors event over Nonato, who placed second as Marcial Catangue of Butuan City finished third.
Gabor pocketed P3,000 while Nonato had P2,000 and Catangue with P1,000.
Nonato, in a separate phone interview, admitted he made a big mistake during the stretch, saying, "Namali ko ug shift from heavy gear to low gear so na alanganin ko tapos wala ko kabantay na ni-overtake na si Gabor sa ako (I made a mistake in changing from high to low gear only to see that Gabor has already overtaken me)."
PhilCycling deputy secretary for Mindanao Salvador "Jun" Paholio, in another interview, said Team Rody members were not physically ready for the competition.
"Wala sa condition ang bikers kasi dumating lang sila sa South Cotabato 12 am ng Sabado so basically kulang sila ng pahinga and tulog pero kahit dalawa lang ang nakapasok proud pa rin ako," Paholio said.
