HAPPY and proud. These were the first words that Holy Cross of Davao College chesser Ella Grace Moulic said when asked on her being named as this year's Female Athlete of the Year when the 20th So Kim Cheng Sports Awards Night unwraps at the Grand Regal Hotel on July 22.

"Wala gyud ko nag-expect na ako ang mapili karon na female athlete of the year kay kabalo ko daghan pud gyud ang mga athletes na daghan sad ug na-achieve sa ilang mga sports (I really didn't expect to be chosen for the award as other athletes who have also achieved in their respective sports are also deserving)," Moulic said at the sidelines of the 5th JVR Inter-School Chess Team Championship 2014 that opened last Saturday at the JVR complex, J. P. Laurel Avenue.

Moulic bagged a total of four gold medals, one silver, one bronze for Team Philippines in the 15th Asean Group Chess Championships in Macau, China last month.

She said, "I think the bases of the selection of the athletes are the number of medals won in international competitions."

She added, "Siguro iimprove pa nako akong dula bisan athlete of the year awardee ko karon ug mas mutaas pa expectation nila sa akoa (I still need to improve myself in chess especially now I'm an athlete of the year. People will expect more from me)."

Moulic intends to be cited every year in the SKC awards, thus, she vowed to keep improving in her game.

Candiate woman master (CWM)-elect Moulic, second child of Alfred and Edna, aims to earn the elusive woman national master next year.

Moulic, however, doesn't believe that titles and awards are the basis for an athlete's success as these are only bonuses.

She's thankful that God made her achieve so much in her young age.

She urged athletes to "practice hard to enhance your skills."
