A TOTAL of 40 futsal players joined the fun-filled 1st Futsal Workshop handled by Azkals vice-captain Chieffy Caligdong and former Azkals member Yannick Tuazon at the SM Lanang Premier Parking Lot C over the weekend.
Organized by Maharlika Sports Development Institute, Inc., the workshop aimed to formally introduce the sport to the athletes including its rules.
Fifa/Futsal Referee Rey Ritaga, in a meet and greet session during the workshop, said," Futsal is one of the fastest growing sports in Asia. In other countries, futsal has now been considered as one of the popular sports."
He said, "It would be a good training ground for football players to begin first in this grassroots set-up game like futsal before going to bigger competitions in football."
Caligdong, in a separate statement, bared that he plans to establish a football academy named after him here in Davao City.
The football academy will not only focus on the teaching aspect but it will give practical application on the field.
"Mas maganda if sa futsal training magstart ating aspiring football players para mas madevelop ang skills nila for them to apply it pagdating nila sa mas matataas na competitions," Caligdong said.
In the duration of the workshop, four teams composed of players from Hyenas FC, Sakya FC, and SOS Children's Village FC played with Caligdong and Tuason.
MSDII technical official Dave Peñano, meanwhile, said they're happy with the warm reception of Dabawenyos with the She Futsal and Futsal workshop events.
