Golf: EMCOR Davao Pro-Am Tournament next week-A A +A
Thursday, July 24, 2014
FIRST, the winners of the 2014 Open Championship. I know this is old news, but I will still mention the winners. The champion was Rory McIlroy. Tied for second place were Sergio Garcia and Rickie Fowler. In fourth place was Jim Furyk. Tied for fifth place were Marc Leishman and Adam Scott. Tied for seventh place were Charl Schwartzel and Edoardo Molinari. Tied for ninth place were Shane Lowry, Graeme McDowell and Victor Dubuisson.
Other notables: Phil Mickelson, tied for 23rd. Luke Donald, tied for 64th. Pinoy-Aussie Jason Day, tied for 58th. Tiger Woods, 69th. How frustrating. Tiger scored a 69 on day 1. And then a 77 on day 2. I even thought he would not make the cut. Almost! FYI, it was his worst finish in a major championship as a pro.
Change topic. This coming July 25-27, 2014 is the monthly tournament of Apo Golf Club. There is a new set of officers, and there may be changes in the tournament fees. I am not sure myself. But, just in case you are wondering, here are the current fees. And, for those of you who wish to play more than once to improve on your score, you can, for a cheaper rate.
For members. Day 1 is P500 and for day 2 & 3, it is P300.
For guests. Day 1 is 800 pesos, and for day 2 & 3, it is 500 pesos.
On Day 1 and 2, tee time is from 5am to 2pm. And for Day 3, Sunday, it is from 5am up to 10am only. There is a mulligan—one per 9 holes. Naku, dear players, with this package—two mulligans per game and 3 days to try, your handicap will go down quickly. I hope they count the monthly medal scores in the computation of the handicaps. Crocodiles and sandbaggers, please play three days!
You know, there was a time in my life when my handicap was still high and I was playing very well. I was terrible at pitching and putting. But then, I got better at my short game and that meant less pitches and putts for 18 holes. So, that meant a big improvement on my score. And that meant a net score of 6 under my handicap or more during the coming tournaments. And I started winning often. The other players were complaining. Hey, it happens.
And then my handicap started getting lower and lower. I welcomed it! And it came to a point where my handicap reached 8, at Apo Golf! Wow! It felt so good. How nice to be called a single digit handicapper playing at Apo Golf Club. Who cares about washing machines or what other prizes they give out. Class A player na ako. About trophies, I had so many already. One more trophy would not make that much difference anymore. I would rather be known as a winless Class A player, than be known as an overstaying Class D or Class C champion. Oh well. It’s just my opinion.
Next week, from July 31-August 2, the Emcor Davao Pro-Am Golf Tournament will be held at Apo Golf Club. Tournament fee is P6,000 per team and the format is alternate shot. Better play this weekend and join the monthly medal since the course will be closed next weekend.
