Outstanding athletes, coaches feted at SKC Awards

THE stars of the night took center-stage and were given the fitting honor they deserved during the 20th So Kim Cheng Sports Awards Night held at the Luzon ballroom of the Grand Regal Hotel Tuesday evening.

Male Athlete of the Year awardee karateka Gabriel Quiñones, who clinched three gold medals in the 15th Malaysian Milo Karatedo Open Championship 2014 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, said: "Of course happy ko ug proud ug pasalamat ko sa akong school, family ug sa akong friends kay sila ang reason ngano nakuha nako ning achievements (Of course I'm very happy and proud and at the same time thankful to my school, family, and friends for their support)."

Woman candidate master (WCM) Ella Grace Moulic, hailed as Female Athlete of the Year, was overjoyed by the recognition, saying, "I'll be forever grateful to the members of the Davao City Sports Council, Inc. and the So Kim Cheng Sports Foundation, Inc. for this honor they gave me." The Holy Cross of Davao College 15-year-old student collected four golds, one silver and one bronze in the 15th ASEAN+Age-Group Chess Championship 2014 held in Macau, China.

Outstanding arnis male athlete Kleinn B. Mataverde, a Palarong Pambansa gold medalist in the secondary boys full contact bantamweight division, said, "Happy ug proud kaayo ko kaya ko ng mga gihaguan kay narecognize (I'm very happy and proud that all of my efforts are recognized)."
Outstanding arnis female athlete Dianalyn M. Alcain, for her part, said she couldn't be happier with her award.

Association for the Advancement of Karatedo (AAK) Davao member Josh Andrew Worsley of St. Paul College, an eight-year-old gold medalist in the 2nd Adidas International Cup held at Makati Coliseum last January, said he's very happy and proud to be recognized as one of the best in karate.

Be-medaled karateka Carmela Marie C. Estarija, a three-time SKC awardee, said, "I'm happy and proud for this recognition."

Julian Ambrose L. Ramirez, a 13-year-old first time SKC awardee, for his part, said he's very happy, proud and grateful to those who supported him.

Swimming's outstanding female athlete Zoe Marie Hilario, a first-time
SKC awardee, said, "I'm happy to claim this award." Hilario copped a gold medal in the 2014 Palarong Pambansa.

Meanwhile, Davao City Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte, in his message delivered by City Administrator Melchor Quitain, said: "The city government of Davao will be always grateful to the DCSCI for filling in the void in behalf of the government to give recognitions and awards to exceptional and talented athletes."

Quitain urged SKCSFI chair So Peng Kee, "Never put a stop to the SKC Awards. It's your filial responsibility to continue the legacy of your grandfather. You started this so you should never put an end to this. I will always pray that there will be more 20 years."

SKCSFI president Dexter So, in his closing remarks, assured that they will pursue the awards night to help not just the athletes but the city of Davao as well.

"We are very thankful and grateful for the support of sponsors, partners, and friends for the past twenty years," Dexter said.

DCSI president Ben Sur also thanked the city government of Davao, different sports organizations for their unwavering support to the event and the DCSCI.

"Let's keep the fire burning and continue exhibiting excellence of these athletes through sports competitions," Sur added.
