TEAM Philippines lost team on the last stretch and ended its title-bid goodbye after bowing to China 2, 2-4, in the championship match of the 2014 World Pool Team Championship at Tongzhou Luhe High School in Beijing, China Saturday evening.

Dennis Orcollo, who hails from Bislig, surigao del Sur, lost to Liu Haitao, 4-6, in their men's 8-ball single while his compatritos Carlo Biado and Lee Vann Corteza fell at the hands of Wang Can and Dang Jinhu, 2-6, in their men's 8-ball doubles clash before Davao City native Corteza succumbed to Dang Jinhu, 5-8, in men's 8-ball single.

With the Chinese surging to a 3-0 lead, the Philippines crawled back as two-time World Womens' 10-Ball champion Rubilen Amit and former World 8-Ball champion Orcollo racked up wins in the next two events, lifting the Filipinos' hope of a shootout. Amit demolished Fu Xiaofang, 8-4, in women's 9-ball single while Orcollo defeated Wang Can, 7-5, in men's 10-ball single.

The Philippines, trailing at 2-3 in the match, looked hopeful with the 10-ball mixed tandem of Biado and Amit. Chinese tandem of Liu Haitao and Liu Shasha, however, kept Biado and Amit at bay, leading at 3-1. The Filipinos took the next frame but the Chinese answered back to keep a two-point lead. Biado and Amit won the seventh frame though but the Chinese pair got two more frames to pace, 6-4. The hard-fighting Filipinos managed to claim the 11th rack to close the gap at 5-6 but the Chinese kept their momentum and never looked back to secure the championship and the top purse of $80,000.

Philippines settled for $40,000 in the $300,000 cuefest sanctioned by the World Pool Association (WPA). (MLSA)
