Admu rules collegiate swimfest

THE Ateneo de Manila University (Admu) tankers lorded over their rivals in the collegiate division of the just-concluded All-Ateneo Swimming Championships held at Fr. Rodolfo Malasmas, S.J. Swimming Pool, Ateneo de Davao University-Matina Campus, Saturday.

Admu's prized tanker Olympian Jessie Lacuna and Hannah Datu captured the college men's and women's 100-meter butterfly gold medals.

Lacuna, a be-medaled veteran internationalist, clocked 56 seconds to race past teammates Gio Palencia (1:00.72) and Roble Batungbacal (1:04) who settled for the silver and bronze, respectively.

Datu, for her part, registered 1:02.35 beating former Southeast Asian (SEA) Games campaigner Celina Gonzalez (1:11.22) and Thea Caluma (1:12.72), both from Admu, for the gold. Gonzalez and Caluma took the next two places.

Lacuna and Dato also toppled their rivals in men’s and women's 200 individual medley and 1,000m freestyle events. Lacuna and Nathania Rockwood copped the men's and women's 50m butterfly golds.

Admu's Axel Ngui topped the men's 50m backstroke while teammate Ariana Herranz clinched the women's 100m backstroke gold.

Ngui timed 27.59 over Jeric Santos (27.85) and Lacuna (27.94) while Herranz checked in at 32.43 at the expense of Maria Andrea Katrina Torres (33.38) and Julia Iona Balanag (33.52).

Admu's Carlo Silva and Hannah Dato emerged champions in college men's and women's 100m breastroke while Ngui and Roanne Yu finished annexed the 50m freestyle golds.

Alberto Batungbacal and Ramona Datu, meanwhile, seized the men's and women's 50m breastroke golds while Addu's Franco del Rio swept the men's 200 IM, 50m freestyle, 50m backstroke and 100m breaststroke.

Addu's Pia Ballos also shared the limelight by bagging three golds in High School girls 100m butterfly, 50m backstroke and 100m backstroke even as teammate Danica Trinidad struck for six golds (50m butterfly, 50m breaststroke, 100m freestyle, 200m IM, 50m freestyle, 100m breaststroke).

Addu swimming coach and Aquatics Program Head Rose Rodriguez, in a phone interview with Sun.Star Davao, said the event was successful and that they plan to conduct another swimming competition before the year ends.

All winners received trophies and medals in the event that was organized by Addu Athletics office in cooperation with the Aquatics Office.

Special awards were given away to outstanding swimmers Ngui and Hannah Dato of Admu as well as to Del Rio and Trinidad of Addu.
