11 teams in rugby football tourney

A TOTAL of 11 teams are seeing action when the Philippine Rugby Football Union-sponsored Touch Rugby tournament unfurls on August 16 and 23 at the Davao City National High School Football Field.

The 6-a side mixed gender touch event features Under-12, Under-14, and open categories. It will follow a single round-robin format for the Open division, double round-robin formats for U-12 and U-14.

Participating teams are SOS Children's Village Davao, Buhangin Jr. Falcons, Royal Valley Jr. Pirates, Foundation of Balay Pasilungan, Tugbok Stallions, University of Mindanao (UM)-Matina, Mindanao Kokusai Daigaku Bearcats, Davao City National High School (DCNHS), Roval Valley Academy, Buhangin Falcons RFC, Bangkal-Talomo Golems, Rugby Development Officer Blessie Kate P. Delos Santos, in an interview with Sun.Star Davao, said the champions will represent Davao City to the Batang Pinoy nationals later this year.

"The top four teams during the first day eliminations will advance to the medal round which will happen on August 23. Then top two teams will be pitted in the championship on the same day," Delos Santos said in vernacular.

Delos Santos, on the other hand, bared that an exhibition game tagged as "Durians Dare 4", a full contact rugby competition between Arancillo North Stars and the Twinsburgh Southside Native Durians, will follow after the finals games.

She added, "A special clinic for the Underprivileged children and youth-at-risk will be the highlight of the Kadayawan Rugby Tournament."

Medals and trophies will be awarded to the top three teams while all athletes will receive certificates of participation from the city government of Davao through the Sports Develpment Division of the City Mayor's Office (SDD-CMO).

The event is being supported by DCNHS, Department of Education (DepEd), Davao Durians Rugby Football Club, Merkat Security Services, Pot Bellied Pigs RFC Hong Kong, and VisMin Rugby Football Union. (KRP)
