THE Tagum City National High School (TCNHS), University of the Immaculate of Conception (UIC) and Ateneo de Davao University (AdDU)-High School hack out wins over their respective rivals in yesterday's opener of the Philippine Volleyball Federation (PVF)-sanctioned 12th Season of the Shakey's Girls Volleyball League-Southern Mindanao-leg at the Davao Doctor's College gym.

TCNHS beat Maa National High School, 25-15, 25-12, while UIC demolished Notre Dame of Cotabato, Inc., 25-15, 27-25.

Ateneo team captain Allia Paula Maspinas along with teammates Samantha Nichole Dizon, Karissa Renee Parcon, and guest player Carol Joy Concon combined efforts and capitalized on CJC's errors to take the first set.

CJC team captain Princess Bello ten inspired teammates Mea Christine Pantil, Misha Ann Flores, Mirzi Dale Valeros, and guest player Charice Baliscao to put up a 5-0 run after the 12 -all deadlock in the second set.

Ateneo's Maspinas and Dizon ended the CJC rally by hitting three attack points from Concon's set-up plays they answered back with a 6-0 spurt to win the game.

CJC coach Angelo M. Angelo, in an interview with Sun.Star Davao, said a miscommunication among his players hurt them.

"Kaya man unta ang Ateneo kay napildi gud namo ni sila ug two set during a match sa Davao Association of Catholic Schools (DACS) so confident ko na kamo sila. Naa gud unta improvised plays para sa macounter ang Ateneo pero dili makuha (We could have beaten Ateneo as we had done so in Dacs Meet but we just couldn't counter their attacks)," Angelo said.

Ateneo coach Kirk Mojica, for his part, said he's confident to win again in the tournament even though most of her players are newcomers.

"Basta magstick lang kami sa gameplan namin na dapat kami ang magdictate ng tempo ng game kaya namin ipanalo ulit ito," coach Kirk added.

First timers Daniel R. Aguinaldo National High School (DRANHS) and Notre Dame of Cotabato, Inc. teams, however, are ready to test their mettle in the league, said leg organizer Abet Bernan of Balibolista de Dabaw during a press conference graced by national tournament director of Shakey's V-League and vice-president of Metro Sports Johans Buevinida at Shakey's Pizza-Gaisano Mall Sunday evening.

Elimination games were ongoing as of presstime.
