Buhangin, UM, SOS axe debut triumphs

THE Buhangin Falcons Rugby Football Club(RFC)-B, University of Mindanao(UM)-Matina Rhinos, SOS Chidren's Village-Seniors Yellow posted victories a the start of the Philippine Rugby Football Union-supported 29th KadayawansaDabaw Open Rugby Tournament held at the Davao City National High School Football field yesterday.

Buhangin Falcons RFC-B beat Royal Valley Pirates, 3-1, behind the combined efforts of Kevin C. DelaCerna, JehoRabanes, JomarieEballar, Joselito D. Santander, Romel Fernando, and Presman U. Bingtan in the 6-a side mixed gender event.

Playing coach Bingtan, in an interview with Sun.Star Davao, said their participation in the rugby football event is not only aimed for the awards but more on the discipline and values learned by his players.

"Ang akong gusto dili lang puro skills ilang makuha sa dula, apil disciplina sa ilang kaugalingon labi na uban players nako sa team kay gikan sa prisohan tungod kay naay mga kaso ug mga nagadroga (I just don't want them to learn the skills but also to learn discipline and values since some of them were imprisoned due to illegal drugs use and crime-related cases)," coach Bingtan added.

BFRFC player Joselito Santander, in a separate interview, said joining tournament like this encourages the youth to be active in sports.
Santander said, "Mas maayo ni siya para sa kabataan para maduol sa sports ug malayo sa mga bisyo ug droga (This is a better avenue to be involved in sports and to be kept from vices and drugs)."

"To from a better relationship by interacting with other players from other teams and to promote healthy lifestyle," the 21-year-old player added.

UM-Matina Rhinos, for its part, blanked Royal Valley Academy, 4-0.
SOS CV Seniors Yellow stamped DCNHS Alumni,2-0. SOS CV Seniors was bannered by Neil Agopo, Jerry Marasigan, Jennifer Rosal, Agot Danton, RosebeHilot, SilvindJosol, and Jonel Castillo.

In the U-14 category, Buhangin Baby Falcons thrashed SOS Juniors Yellow, 4-0, that also bowed to BalayPasilungan on the same note in another game.

The tournament is sponsored by DCNHS, Department of Education (Deped), Davao Durians Rugby Football Club, Merkat Security Services, Pot Bellied Pigs RFC Hong Kong, and VisMIn Rugby Football Union.

Games were still being played as of Friday.
