Maamo bags Kadayawan open chess title-A A +A

DAVAO City's very own Harrison Maamo scored perfect six points to clinch the title of the 2014 Kadayawan Open Chess tournament held Friday at the NCCC Mall Foodcove function hall.
The fifth-seeded Maamo bested fourth-ranked Henry Roger Lopez of Panabo City and 28th-seeded Ben Clyde Castro who placed second and third, respectively.
Lopez, a be-medaled Para Games athlete, earned 5.5 points while unheralded Castro bested four other five-pointers Clark Dario, John Gerard Acedo and Reynaldo Quinonez and Efren Bautista via superior tiebreaks.
Top-seed Jason Salubre finished eighth, edging other 4.5 scorers national master MacacunaMacala, Eric Fernandez, Napoleon Recososa and Peter Tidoy who occupied the next four spots.
Four-pointers were Vincent Umayan, John Christian Lesaca, Alvin Acas, Rey Amable, JoerlzGimony, Rey Urbiztondo, Kurt John Placencia, National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) regional director James Infiesto, Arnie Consigna, William Repalda, Edwin Bacalso, Starjean Candia, Lester Obligado and Leo BhenSabay.
Gimony was hailed best female player, Placencia and Castro as best junior players in the one-day event presented by the city government of Davao through the Sports Development Division of the City Mayor's Office.
Cash prizes, champion's trophy and medals were at stake in the event that attracted 83 players. (MLSA)
