Unheralded pair stuns top-seed in 3-hr finals-A A +A

THE unheralded pair of Edgar "Gaga" Quiñones and Russel Judabal made "chip and charge net play" to upset top-seeded tandem of Barry Vicente and Daniel Abad in a grueling three-hour finals match of the Mayor Rody and Vice Mayor Paolo Duterte Kadayawan Class A Doubles Tennis Championship at the Las Terrazas Subdivision indoor tennis courts in Maa Sunday.
Quiñones-Judabal escaped past Vicente-Abad, 6-4, 6-7 (8), 6-3 to clinch the title and capture the P10,000 cash prize. The latter settled for the P5,000 runner-up prize.
Organizer Philippine Tennis Association (Philta) regional vice-president Juanito "Titong" Cansino, Jr. said the champion pair changed strategy in the finals after "displaying a ground stroke consistency" to beat second-ranked Juan Paolo Cansino and Gabriel Perez, 7-6 (5), 6-0, in their semi-finals clash.
Vicente-Abad, meanwhile, kept their fiery form to outclass Marvin Camino and Butch Jayme, 6-1, 7-5, in the other semis match.
The semis losers received P2,500 each while quarter-finals losers got P1,000 per pair.
Cansino was joined by Sports Development Division of the City Mayor's Office (SDD-CMO) staff Imsave Obial and Laz Terrazas LTHAI president Dr.Ceasar Sy awarded the cash prizes.
A total of 14 pairs competed in the annual netfest organized as part of the 2014 Kadayawan Sports Festival.
