THE SOS Children's Village Blue clinched the U-14 title of the 29th Kadayawan sa Dabaw Touch Rugby Football Tournament held at the Davao City National High School field over the weekend.
SOS beat Buhangin Baby Falcons, 1-0, in extra time. Rugby development officer Blessie Kate delos Santos, in a Facebook chat interview with Sun.Star Davao, said, "For me lingaw kaayo ang dula kay lig-on kaayo ang depensa sa duha ka teams (Both teams played good defense. It was really an entertaining match)," Delos Santon said.
In the open division, the Buhangin Falcons Rugby Football Club-B arranged a titular showdown against Royal Valley Pirates after beating Mindanao Kokusai Daigaku Bearcats, 4-1, in the semi-finals.
BFRFC-B, which defeated DCNHS Alumni in the quarterfinals (1-0), executed their plays to deny the MKD Bearcats a spot in the finals. DCNHS Alumni relied on the services of Kevin Dela Cerna, Jeho Rabanes, Jomarie Eballar, Joselito Santander, Romel Fernando and Presman Bingtan.
Playing-coach Bingtan, in an interview with Sun.Star Davao, said he's happy with the performance of the team in the tournament.
"Kami nagatrain mi sa team four times a week para mas mapakusog pa ang skills sa among players (We do our training as a team four times a week in order to improve the skills of our players in preparation for tournaments)," Bingtan said.
Royal Valley Pirates, meanwhile, eked out a 1-0 win over BFRFC-A, 1-0, to secure a finals berth.
Rugby Development officer Blessie Kate Delos Santos, in a Facebook chat with Sun.Star Davao, said the progress of the tournament has been great.
"Very competitive ang teams so enjoy kaayo sila nagadula (The teams have been competitive from the start up until the end)," Delos Santos said.
Delos Santos said the top three teams in each category will receive medals and trophies through the Sports Development Division of the City Mayor's Office (SDD-CMO).
The championship game for the U-12 category is set on Saturday. An exhibition match, dubbed as Durians Dare 4", a full contact rugby competition between Arancillo North Stars and the Twinsburgh Southside Native Durians, will follow after the championships.
The event is being supported by DCNHS, Department of Education (Deped), Davao Durians Rugby Football Club, Merkat Security Services, Pot Bellied Pigs RFC Hong Kong, and VisMin Rugby Football Union.
