THE Buhangin Falcons Rugby Football Club (BFRFC)-B and BFRFC Baby Falcons Black clinched titles in the open and Under-12 categories in the recently concluded 29th Mayor Rodrigo and Paolo Duterte Kadayawan sa Dabaw Touch Rugby Football tournament Saturday held at the Davao City National High School (DCNHS) field.
BFRFC-B Falcons captured the title at the expense of Royal Valley Pirates, 2-0. Falcons played an all around effort behind the efforts Kevin dela Cerna, Jeho Rabanes, Jomarie Ebalar, Joselito Santander, Romel Fernando and Pressman Bingtan.
Falcons confused the defense of Pirates by playing sneaky passing of the BFRFC-B players which led to two points. Pirates, on the other hand, didn't manage to score all game long thanks to the solid defense showcased by the Falcons.
Royal valley Pirates, for its part, settled for the silver medal followed by BFRFC-A for the bronze honors.
Playing-coach Bingtan, in a post-game interview with Sun.Star Davao, said it was a game of two evenly matched teams but Falcons provided the exclamation point at the end of the game for the win.
In the U-12 division, BFRFC Baby Falcons Black lorded over fellow BFRFC team Baby Falcons Blue, 4-0. Jaymart P. Baguio played an inspired game in the gold medal match as he spearheaded the attack along with teammates Jerome Edaño, Honey Laine Bunawan, John Danielle Campos, Renan mark Cozo, James Taytayan, Ronnel Saludes, and Roy Cabael to earn a lopsided victory against Blue team.
BFRFC Baby Falcons Blue and Royal Valley Jr. Pirates settled for the silver and bronze honors, respectively.
Bingtan said, "I'm happy na marami na kaming naiiuwi na mga prizes sa rugby football tournament and it should be credited to the efforts of these kids."
"Actually, marami na ang nagawa ang tournament na ito for these kids. Hindi lang sa pagimprove ng kanilang skills sa game but also character development and values learned by my players. Marami ang lumapit sa akin during this tournament na mga parents and organizations at sinasabi nila na gusto nila ipasali ang mga anak nila para maengage sa sports at para na rin malayo sila sa mga drugs and bisyo. Kaya mas lalo akong inspired na mas pagbutihin ang trabaho ko sa mga bata," Bingtan added.
Special awards were awarded to Jehu Rabanes (BFRFC) and Prince Joven Saron (RV Pirates) as the Most Valuable Players (MVP), Devon Jhones Lumapas (DCNHS) got the Fairplay Award in the Open Division; Elven Flores and Daniel Samillano were hailed as MVPs in the U-14 division with Kervey Jhon Obeso (Foundation of Balay Pasilungan) getting the Fairplay award; and Jaymart Baguio (BFRFC) and Jonel Mapanao were crowned as MVPs while John Paul Lumapac got the Fairplay award in the U-12 division.
