LEOMER Losentes showed much firepower, firing game-high 33 points including 20 in the third period and burying six triples, to crown Goldstar Hardware 78th Mayor Rody and Vice Mayor Pulong Araw ng Dabaw Commercial Basketball Tournament champions at last at the jam-packed Almendras Gym Davao City Recreation Center Thursday evening.
Losentes, thus, romped away with the most valuable player (MVP) award and P5,000 cash as the Ice Gravador-coached Goldstar hacked out a rousing 89-69 win over Montaña Pawnshop in the finals to claim the trophy and P100,000 cash prize awarded by Sports Development Division of the City Mayor's Office (SDD-CMO) officer-in-charge William "Butch" Ramirez and Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) regional director Regino "Boy" Cua during the brief awarding rites.
The Panwbrokers settled for the P60,000 runner-up prize.
"This is special for me. This is our very first Araw ng Dabaw championship. We waited for this for three years," Goldstar Hardware team owner Winston Ho said in an interview with Sun.Star Davao after the game.
He praised the coaches and the players, citing that "practice, hard work and heart" were the key factors to their victory.
Coach Gravador, for his part, said: "It (win) is very special simply because it's our first Araw ng Dabaw title."
He said they've learned from their 59-64 loss to Montaña in the eliminations.
"We paid more attention in boxing out (Lanory) Sanjo and tried to limit his offensive rebounds. We were also able to limit their transition offense and made them play slow halfcourt type offense," Gravador added.
Goldstar soared to a nine-point lead but stretched it to 16, 40-24, at the break behind the efforts of black import Charles Mammie, Ipe Refuerzo, Alvin Pasaol and Marlon Basco.
Losentes then made it his own show in the third canto as Goldstar kept the Flordelito "Dodong" Cagampang-mentored Montaña at bay, 68-41, going into the fourth.
Montaña tried to come back, with an 8-2 burst courtesy of Big Boy Clabel and Jojo Tangkay to cut Goldstar's lead, 52-38. But Montaña lost steam, succumbing to crucial errors and costly turnovers while Goldstar looked poise to secure the championship.
Leo Najorda and Mammie added 18 and 12 markers, respectively, for Goldstar while Tangkay poured in 20 and Clabel added 10 for Montaña owned by Armand Quibod.
In the battle for third, the San Beda Red Lions-bannered The Royal Mandaya Hotel-City Mayor's Office (SDD-CMO) demolished MP Zamboanga, 82-64. TRMH-CMO received P40,000 while MP Zamboanga went home with P30,000.
The four-day SBP-sanctioned league was presented by the city government of Davao through SDD-CMO as part of the annual Araw ng Dabaw sportsfest.
