DLSU-AdMU rivalry in 'Araw' cagefest

Friday, February 03, 2017

DABAWENYOS will soon witness the rivalry of De La Salle University (DLSU) Green Archers and Ateneo de Manila University (AdMU) Blue Eagles come alive as both teams vie for the title of the 80th Araw ng Dabaw commercial basketball tournament at the Almendras Gym Davao City Recreation Center (DCRC) in March.

Sports Development Division of the City Mayor's Office (SDD-CMO) staff Cholo Elegino, during the Davao Sportswriters Association Forum at the NCCC Mall Davao Food Cove function hall Thursday, said the Green Archers will represent The Royal Mandaya Hotel again when they defend their Araw title.

The reigning UAAP men's basketball champion DLSU will not just have to contend with the Blue Eagles though as the National University, University of the Philippines, Davao City's very own Montaña Pawnshop, and Pacman team of General Santos City will also compete.

"The sports directors and coaches of the UAAP teams called me and expressed their interest to join the annual cagefest," Elegino said.

He said that the UAAP teams were enticed to participate in the league after seeing the improvements on DLSU and Far Eastern Philippines teams since coming to play in Davao in recent years.

"It pays a big help for the UAAP athletes to be exposed to intense physical contact like DLSU who have currently been dominating the UAAP," Elegino said, adding that he already met with the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas and discussed the things that need to be considered.

Cash prizes of P100,000, P60,000, P40,000 and P30,000 will be awarded to the top four teams.
