NEWCOMER Philippine Women's College (PWC) Patriots scored a lopsided 77-57 victory over Holy Cross College of Sasa in the resumption of the Fil-Oil/Flying V Junior Invitational Basketball Tournament on Saturday afternoon, July 15, at the Rizal Memorial Colleges Gym.
Patrick Salvo scored a double-double, pouring in 29 points and grabbing 10 rebounds to pace the Laurence Bencio-coached PWC.
Ian Maniago added 15 points with five rebounds and four assists to ensure the Patriots' debut game triumph in the league bankrolled by Fil-Oil Flying V and organized by Kilusan at Alyansang Samahan ng mga Manlalaro sa Dabaw (Kasama-Davao).
"The team feels elated because we never won against HCCS last year in two meetings. However, we still feel the pressure of the game and now is not the time to celebrate yet," Bencio said, adding that they have to win one game at a time.
He also said that being an underdog drove his players to prove that they deserve to be part of the league.
PWC, meanwhile, played against newbie Daniel Aguinaldo National High School as of Sunday.
Meanwhile, defending champion Ateneo de Davao University redeemed itself by sinking Agro-Industrial Foundation College of the Philippines Sailors, 56-53.
Davao Jones Academy, meanwhile, trounced last year's runner-up Assumption College of Davao, 92-74.
