Friday, October 06, 2017

A TOTAL cash prize of P150,000 is at stake when the Mayor James Gamao National Invitational Tennis Championship 2017 gets underway on October 19 to 22 in Panabo City.

Tournament director Boy Diong, however, said breakdown of prizes will have yet to be finalized.

Diong, who guested during the Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at NCCC Mall Davao Food Cove Thursday, October 5, said the new tennis courts in Panabo City meet standards, “just like the ones our invited players are used to playing on in Manila.”

Top-ranked Patrick John Tierro and tournament defending champion Butuan City native Johnny Arcilla along with Leander Lazaro, Mark Anthony Alcoseba of Davao City, John Mari Altiche, Noel Mariano Damian, Jr., Elbert Vicente Anasta and Fritz Chris Verdad will be grouped into two brackets. Players in each group will then play the round robin format.

The top two netters in each bracket will advance to the semifinals where winners will play for the title of the netfest backed by Merco and Selecta along with Engr. Glenn Olandria, Bioxtend, Stronghold Insurance,
Swiss Deli, Mamma Marias by Paul Abao, Rocky's Barbershop by Timtom Gempesaw, Asiatraders, Slazenger.

The champion and runner-up will receive cash prizes while the rest of the semifinals and quarterfinals losers will also not go home empty-handed.

"We will hold a free tennis clinic for eight to 16 years old," Diong, a certified International Tennis Federation (ITF) coach and former rated player in the country during his prime, added.

He thanked Engineer Glen Olandria of the Panabo City Engineer's Office for initiating to hold the tournament in their city as a way to promote sports among the youth and keep them away from vices and illegal drugs.

The competition, now on its sixth year, used to be held in Davao City.

Major backers are Merco and Selecta along with Engr. Glenn Olandria, Bioxtend, Stronghold Insurance, Swiss Deli, Mamma Marias by Paul Abao, Rocky's Barbershop by Timtom Gempesaw, Asiatraders, Slazenger and Dunlop.
