THE Mayor Inday Sara and Vice Mayor Rody Duterte 76th Araw ng Dabaw Age-Group Tennis Tournament gets underway tomorrow, Friday, at the GSIS Heights Tennis Club courts in Matina.

Philippine Tennis Association (Philta) regional vice-president Juanito "Titong" Cansino Jr., also tournament referee, yesterday said the singles draw for 10 years old and under unisex and boys and girls 12-under, 14-under, 16-under and 18-under categories is set at 12 noon today.

The Nick Serafica-coached Montaña hacked out a rousing 96-62 win over the Jigger Saniel-mentored Goldstar Hardware behind the heroics of black import Devon Sullivan who poured in 21 points as teammates Don Adormeo and Dino Daa added 13 points each.

Veloso falls, Cansino wins in GSISHTC night netfest

REV. Dexter Veloso lost his second match while Juanito "Titong" Cansino, Jr. beat his first round rival as the 1st GSIS Heights Tennis Club (GSISHTC) Night Singles Tournament resumed over the weekend at GSISHTC in Matina.

Veloso, an 8-3 winner over Alvin Supan in the opener, suffered a heartbreaking 7-8 (5-7) defeat at the hands of Joey Libron in their class B clash. Scott Tubbs, who lost via default last time, breezed past Jin Aniga in walkover while Toto Bisnon whipped Calot Pates, 8-1, to also advance in the same group.

UV dethrones JMC, 77-64 for national students title

THE University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers of Cebu City dethroned defending champion Jose Maria College (JMC) Kings, 77-64, in the 65th National Student Basketball Championships finals held Sunday evening in Don Carlos, Bukidnon.

JMC sports coordinator Mark Alemania, in text messages to Sun.Star Davao on Tuesday, said: "Dagko kaayo ang mga kalaban. Naa pud silay duha ka import nga Negro (Our boys played against bigger and taller players including two black imports)."

Villamor, Tandingan top SBC Dalawahan

BONG Villamor and Louie Tandingan combined efforts to emerge champion in the SBC Weekly Dalawahan Bowling Tournament held Sunday evening at the Fairlanes Bowling Center.

Villamor and Tandingan rolled a total of 751 pinfalls after three games to receive the champion's prize of P1,500 cash while runner-up pair Nonoy Baluyot and Berting Gorgonio hit 732 pinfalls to claim P1,000.

Twice-to-beat Bolongan, who topped the eliminations, recovered from a first game loss by beating Rene Dalayon of Davao Tenpin Bowlers Association (Datba), 258-248, in the sudden death match of their titular showdown.

‘Araw’ Phoenix Marathon: Sotto, Avergonzado rule 42K

ILIGAN City native Jeffrey Sotto and Davao City's Emely Avergonzado lorded over their rivals to clinch the men's and women's 42K titles, respectively, of the Araw ng Dabaw Phoenix Marathon held Sunday at SM Lanang Premier.

Sotto clocked two hours, 37 minutes and 48 seconds to pocket the P25,000 champion's purse. He raced past Brokenshire College's Anthony Nerza who finished in close second with 2:37:52 and Iligan City's Brian Quiamco (2:47:57) who placed third. Nerza got P15,000 while Quiamco received P10,000.

Homer tops ‘Araw’ bowlfest

TEAM Homer emerged champion in the just-concluded Mayor Inday Sara and Vice-Mayor Rody Duterte 76th Araw ng Dabaw Bowling Tournament at Dover Mega Lanes.

Homer, composed of Arnel Crudo, Muktan Amsirabi, Roy Amsirabi, Louie Tandingan, Emy Dejiga and Alex Alalunay, topped the eight-game series in the elimination round and retained its composure in the step-the-ladder finals.

Panday reeled past Dexter Nonato alson of Davao City and Herper Madero of Tupi, South Cotabato who placed second and third, respectively. Panday received a cash prize of P2,500 while Nonato claimed P1,500 and Madero got P1,000.
