Cebu back-to-back champs in PAL interclub

CEBU CITY — Under the blazing midday sun and with the famous Queen melody “We Are The Champions” resonating in the background, Cebu Country Club celebrated its second straight Philippine Airlines (PAL) Interclub Championship division crown Saturday here.

Family members cheered and team members soaked each other with champagne as Cebu completed a wire-to-wire finish with an impressive final round score of 132 for a dominating 16-point victory in the country’s acknowledged national team championships.

THE journey to greatness continues for Davao City champions who will comprise the bulk of the Davao Region Athletic Association (Davraa) delegation that will see action in the 2013 Palarong Pambansa set on April 21 to 27 in Dumaguete City.

Orchard regains Founders division lead at PAL Interclub

CEBU CITY -- Orchard regained the lead in the Founders division going into the final round of the 66th Philippine Airlines (PAL) Interclub golf championships here, even as Apo and Rancho Palos Verdes virtually bowed out of contention after another poor showing Friday at the Mactan Island Golf Club.

After losing the lead after the second round Thursday, Orchard shot its lowest score in three days Friday with 108 points, but it was enough to build a three-point lead at 340.

Davao City rules again

DEFENDING champion Davao City kept its over-all championship crown by topping both the elementary and secondary divisions of the 2013 Davao Region Athletic Association (Davraa) Meet that came to a close at the sprawling multi-million Davao del Norte Sports and Cultural Center in Brgy. Mankilam, Tagum City, on Friday.

Davao City amassed a total of 863 points (384 in elementary, 479 in secondary) from 18 sports entered in the five-day sportsfest to grab the first place.

1,500 eyed in HB1 Fun Run

SOME 1,500 runners are expected to answer the starting gun when the first-ever HB1 Fun Run kicks off at 5 a.m. on Sunday in an out-and-back course from NCCC Mall Davao parking lot.

Davao golfers way off leaders

CEBU CITY — The golfers from Davao City came through with a much better performance in the second round, but still found themselves way off the leaders in the 66th Philippine Airlines (PAL) Interclub golf championships.

Palos Verdes Golf and Country Club was the better performer between the two teams competing in the Founders division, scoring 116 points at the Cebu Country Club yesterday for a two-day total of 208.

P1.5M earmarked for 76th Araw sportsfest

THE City Government of Davao allocated P1.5 million for the staging of the Mayor Sara and Vice Mayor Rody Duterte 76th Araw ng Dabaw Sports this year.

Out-of-towners favorites in Araw Phoenix Marathon

VISITING runners Arnold Unabia of Tangub and Mary Joy Tabal of Cebu City are heavy favorites to win titles in the 2nd Araw ng Dabaw Phoenix Marathon set on March 10 from SM Lanang Premier to SM City Davao.

Race director Kenneth Sai of Vantage Sports Promotions said Unabia is set to defend his men's 42-kilometer (42K) crown while Tabal may pull off a victory in her category, the women's 21K or women's 42K.

DAVAO City tankers hauled eight more gold medals on the second day of competition late Wednesday afternoon to keep its lead in the 2013 Davao Region Athletic Association (Davraa) Meet swimming event held at the Davao del Norte Sports and Cultural Center in Barangay Mankilam, Tagum City.

The Davao City swimming team, thus, totaled 14 golds, nine silvers and three bronzes as of yesterday press time while Island Garden City of Samal (Igacos) copped three golds, two silvers and five bronzes followed Davao Oriental with three golds and two silvers.

DC tankers haul 6 golds

DAVAO City tankers harvested a total of six gold medals, five silvers and two bronzes on Day 1 of the 2013 Davao Region Athletic Association (Davraa) Meet swimming competition at the Davao del Norte Sports and Cultural Center in Barangay Mankilam, Tagum City late Tuesday afternoon.

The Island Garden City of Samal took one gold, two silvers and two bronzes while Davao Oriental copped one gold and one bronze. Tagum City accounted for three bronzes while Compostela Valley salvaged one bronze.

FCA cagefest to open April 13

ALL systems go for the Davao leg of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) Basketball League that will open on April 13 at the Almendras Gym Davao City Recreation Center (DCRC).

FCA Philippines national director Gary Visitacion, in an e-mailed statement furnished to Sun.Star Davao, said basketball is one of the sports that FCA uses to reach out to coaches and athletes over the country. Similar FACBL already kicked off in Cebu City, Manila and Bacolod City.

Phoenix Marathon registration opens

REGISTRATION for the Phoenix Petroleum Araw ng Dabaw Marathon, set on March 10 from SM Lanang Premier to SM City Davao Ecoland, opened on Monday.

The marathon, dubbed as “The SM to SM Run”, features the male and female 3K, 5K, 10K, 21K and 42K with registration fees of P199 (3K,5K), P399 (10K), P599 (21K), and P799 (42K).

MA-A National High School (MNHS) and University of Mindanao (UM) players outshine their rivals in the just-concluded SBC Youth Individual Weekly Tournament at the Fairlanes Bowling Center.

Steven Boromeo of MNHS hit a total of 234 pinfalls in two games to rule the boys event over teammate Mar Panwell Yap and Assumption College of Davao's Jhul Cañeda who placed second and third, respectively. Yap rolled a total of 233 pinfalls while Cañeda scored 194.

Medvil FC stays unbeaten after 3 games

THE Medvil Football Club (FC) grabbed back-to-back wins to keep its unbeaten slate in the resumption of the Medvil Cup football tournament held at Deca Homes Resort Residences football field recently.

Medvil FC blanked Holy Child, 6-0, on Monday on the heels of thrashing Calinan Blue Eagles, 5-0, on Sunday. Shem Palang-at, Lyndon Rey Camelotes, John Philip delos Santos, JR Sayson and Vince Banta led scoring for Medvil that earned a total of nine points with a 3-0-0, win-draw-loss card.

PAQUITO Santos captured the gold medal as the Datba Weekly Tournament resumed at the NCCC Mall B3 lanes on Saturday evening.

Santos rolled a total of 861 pinfalls after four games, beating Manny Nierra and Celso Garcia who clinched the silver and bronze, respectively. Nierra hit 844 pinfalls, while Garcia garnered 810.

Ateneo cops 4 Sakya titles

THE Ateneo de Davao University (AdDU) clinched four titles in the just-concluded 4th Sakya Filipino Chinese Football Cup held at the Tionko field over the weekend.

AdDU went home with the boys 14-under title at the expense of Philippine Academy of Sakya, Anakk Sta. Cruz, and SOS Children’s Village that placed second, third and fourth, respectively. Joshua Lim was named most valuable player (MVP) of the same category.
