UM, HCDC bets renew rivalry

ARCH-RIVALS University of Mindanao (UM) and Holy Cross of Davao College will renew their rivalry when the Mayor Rodrigo and Inday Sara Duterte 73rd Araw ng Dabaw Sports Festival Track and Field Competition kicks off at the Davao City National High School oval Saturday.

Philippine Amateur Track and Field Association (Patafa) regional director Belen Kempis Taala said Friday that both teams will vie for the team title in 14-above division of the two-day trackfest that stakes cash prizes to the top three teams.

"We also have a boys and girls 13 and below category featuring eight events while the 14-above division will have some 13 events. We expect some 200 participants seeing action in this annual competition," Taala said in a phone interview with Sun.Star Davao.

She said other teams seeing action are Brokenshire College, Davao Region Athletic Association (Davraa) Meet-bound Davao City team, Magallanes Elementary School and Kapitan Tomas Monteverde Sr. Elementary School, among others.

"We have also out-of-school participants, thus, giving them equal exposure as with the rest of regular campaigners," Taala said.

Events include 50-meter, 100m, 200m, 400m, 4x100, long jump and shot put for the elementary division while 14-above events are 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1,500m, 3,000m, 5,000m, 4x100m relay, 4x400, shot put, long jump, triple jump and discuss throw.

Team winners, however, will be determined via accumulated points.

"In individual events, the first to six placers will earn respective seven points, five, four, three, two and one. We have yet to determine points for team events depending on the turnout of entries," she ended.

The meet is co-presented by Mayor Rodrigo and Vice Mayor Sara Duterte through the Sports Development Division of the City Mayor's Office. (MLSA)
