THE legal counsel of the alleged mastermind in the foiled daytime robbery of a pawnshop in Dumaguete City last year was killed in an ambush Tuesday afternoon in Dalaguete, Cebu province.
Lawyer Noel Archival and two of his escorts were killed while one of the companions was seriously injured following an ambush on the Toyota HiLux vehicle they were riding in Barangay Coro, Dalaguete town in Cebu around 2 p.m. Tuesday.
Archival was returning to Cebu from Dumaguete City following a hearing Tuesday morning at which he represented Jesuslou Elcarte Alegria in a robbery-in-band case at the Regional Trial Court Branch 38 in Dumaguete City.
Alegria, 42, a resident of Pagadian City, Zamboanga del Sur, was arrested after he and several other companions, who are still at large, allegedly pulled the daytime heist at a pawnshop in downtown Dumaguete and carted away some P5-million worth of jewelry last year.
The stolen items were recovered but all the other perpetrators, except Alegria, managed to escape from pursuing law enforcers.
Judge Cenon Repollo, presiding judge of RTC Branch 38, told reporters that the court proceedings against Alegria in relation to the August 24, 2013 robbery involving the Agencia Belen Pawnshop in Dumaguete City was the first of a series.
A continuation of the hearing was supposedly scheduled on Wednesday, however, it was cancelled as Archival is reportedly scheduled to attend another court appearance in Camiguin.
Superintendent James Goforth, chief of police of Dumaguete City, confirmed that Archival has been to Dumaguete a number of times to represent Alegria and previously, a certain Mark Lorenz Solon, a suspected big-time drug pusher who was arrested sometime last December.
However, for unknown reasons, Solon, who is in the police’s watch list of drug personalities, reportedly terminated the services of Archival, Goforth said.
Solon, 38, a resident of Aldecoa Road in Laguna, Barangay Looc, Dumaguete City and the son of a prominent businessman and Adams Guivelondo Cuevas, 50, a resident of Barangay Batinguel in Dumaguete, were arrested during a buy-bust operation during which some 30 grams of suspected shabu were confiscated from them.
Goforth said he believes the ambush-slay of the lawyer is most probably related to his job, considering that he is handling “high profile cases”.
Archival is the brother of Cebu City Councilor Nestor Archival. (PNA)
